Hiker marvels at the vineyards of the wide Etsch Valley

During your hiking week along the old Roman road "Via Claudia Augusta", you will discover one of South Tyrol‘s most beautiful sections located between the Val Venosta Valley region and the southern wine route, causing hikers hearts to leap for joy. The tour starts at the well-known Lake Resia, surrounded by marvellous mountain panorama and with a view onto the snow-covered Ortler-massif. The route leads you along fabulous high-altitude paths high above the fertile Val Venosta Valley towards Merano. Enjoy the view onto splendid vineyards and orchards, numerous castles and palaces along the way and amongst others Reinhold Messners Mountain Museum. The Mediterranean spa town of Merano with its thermal springs offers tremendous opportunities for relaxation.

‘Cosy’ is the magic word on this hiking holiday. There is no trace of stress and rush far and wide. Initially you walk along Lake Resia to Graun, where the former church tower located in the dammed lake is waiting for a souvenir snapshot.

Via Burgusio, Sluderno and Silandro you finally head for Naturno. In the final few days you can stroll through the orchards of the Val Venosta Valley and explore the cultivation areas on the Latschander Waalweg-path.

Tip: You will find the best South Tyrolean wines here. Be sure to sample them!

  • Archaeological sites: Ganglegg and the Tartscher Bühel located in the Upper Val Venosta Valley region are home of the best researched hilltop settlements from the Bronze and Iron Ages.
  • The Messner Mountain Museum: The entire permanent exhibition is dedicated to the myth of the mountain. Whether marvelling at the impressive collection of masks or visiting the adventure library – the museum is worth a detour.

The hiking paths along the irrigation channels are well developed and paved throughout. Since the hiking stages lead along the old irrigation systems, Eurohike hikers can also look forward to many asphalted sections. Nevertheless, a good basic fitness level is required to tackle daily walking times of up to 6.5 hours.

You cannot wait to start your next hike? Then book your next hiking holiday right now and increase you level of bliss and happiness!

Difficulty Level

Walking

You walk mainly on good walking paths, often on the so called ‘Waal paths’, ancient water systems as well as on paved sections. The paths are easy to walk, the route is undulating through lovely countryside, dotted with orchards and vineyards. Longer ascents occur on some of the days. We recommend a good basic fitness level for walking days of up to 6.5 hours. Shortcuts of daily sections are possible by train or coach.
