The Portuguese region of Alentejo on the Atlantic coast is characterised by extensive nature reserves and traditional villages. However, this marvellous hiking destination is also so popular because of its light sandy beaches and unspoilt coastal landscapes. Alentejo is one of the regions in Portugal where you will find a marvellous variety of plant species. Listen to the birdsong in the cork oak forests, breathe in the scent of herbs and savour the music of the sea as you hike along the Rota Vicentina.

The starting point of your hiking journey is in Vila Nova de Milfontes, where you can explore the historic city center. On your journey, you'll traverse picturesque fishing villages, fragrant pine forests, and impressive coastal stretches. The dreamy beaches of Alteirinhos, Carvalhal, Machados, and Amália provide the perfect opportunity to refresh yourself in the sparkling Atlantic during or after your daily stage.
