Let yourself be inspired by the atmosphere in Trento while you ‘hike’ in the mountain villages of Cordeo and Molveno. You will get to know the famous Brenta Dolomites on a circular route before Lake Garda awaits!

The impressive Brenta Dolomites, where you can hike to the glittering Lago Nembia, are a real highlight.
  • Enchanting mountain villages: The liveliness of the Italian zest for life is the perfect change from the quiet hiking tours. Coredo and Molveno, two real gems in Trentino, are waiting to be discovered by you.
  • Rivers, gorges and glittering lakes: The nature of South Tyrol is unique and you will pass several scenic highlights on the journey. You hike through deep gorges and along idyllic river valleys. Be sure to hop into one of the many lakes, e.g. Lake Caldaro. It is one of the warmest mountain lakes in the Alps.
  • Mediterranean flair on Lake Garda: Enjoy the vastness of the lake with a delicious gelato and soak in the liveliness in the alleys of the enchanting villages around Riva, Desenzano and Sirmione.

As you will be hiking along plateaus and climbing, you will need to be fit and wear sturdy shoes. You will be rewarded with great routes and hiking paths, such as the characteristic Waalwege, as well as great views. The six daily stages are ten to 20 km long and are complemented by panoramic mountain trips. The tour is also ideal for a hiking holiday with a dog.

Itinerary at a glance

Hike through Europe’s largest Apple producing region and taste the South Tyrolean wines. On the Castle Trail you will pass numerous fortresses and enjoy a swim in Lake Caldaro, before the Mediterranean flair greets you in Desenzano.

01

Arrival in Caldaro/Lake Caldaro

In the morning you travel to the Mendelpass (saddle of Mendel) by train. Enjoy the phenomenal view before you continue your comfortable walk over the plateau towards Nonstal, the language and provincial border. Into amazing canyons and through idyllic small villages to the pilgrimage site of Saint Romedio and past two small sparkling lakes, you will soon reach Coredo. Here you can enjoy the Italian comfort in the middle of Trentino.

During a short transfer you can admire the impressive landscape of the Val di Non. Afterwards, you hike through lonely forests up to the panoramic square at the worth seeing little church San Tommaso. Continue into the Priori nature park area and across the wetland of a karst lake to Andalo and on to Molveno, situated at the foot of the Brenta Dolomites and on the sparkling turquoise-blue Alpine lake of the same name.

Enjoy the fascinating alpine world of the tall peaks of the Brenta group! You ascend into the mountain area of the Pradel by cable car and you discover one of its most beautiful hiking routes. Stop at a Rifugio (mountain hut) and enjoy a typical Italian snack as well as the impressive view of the surrounding mountain tops, before you slowly descend to the crystal clear, green tarn Lago Nembia.

At the end of your hiking week you walk through the untouched meadows of the valley of Lomason. After that you climb up to Rifugio Monte San Pietro, where you are presented with a stunning view of Lake Garda. Walk down through winding streets and archways, past stonewalls to the castle of Tenno. On the last few kilometres of your tour you walk through olive groves and Mediterranean cypress vegetation until you reach the goal of your hiking week, the banks of Lake Garda.

Difficulty level

Mountain Hiking

You will mainly walk on well-maintained walking paths, often on the Waal paths which are ancient water systems. In some sections you will be walking on forest trails and steep paths. We recommend a good basic fitness level for walking days of 3 up to 6 hours as well as for longer ascents. Easier alternatives of the daily sections are possible by bus. A varied walking tour for lovers of promising trails.

Our autumn hiking tour from Merano to Lake Garda
In September, a hiking group from the Swabian Albverein (one of the oldest hiking clubs in Germany) embarked on our popular hiking tour from Merano to Lake Garda, experiencing the best of both worlds. Alpine paths and views as well as the Mediterranean lifestyle of Italy impressed the enthusiastic hikers, but read more in their travel report: As with all previous Alpine crossings it is an annual highlight! It is an eventful and well-organised trip led by Norbert Faul, who also takes part of the hiking group to the starting point in Merano. There we meet up with other hikers from the Albverein for a joint dinner. The good mood carries over to the whole week and to the weather: pure sunshine on a fantastic hiking route from South Tyrol to Trentino.

For my hiking tour this year, I decided on a shortened version of the classic 'From Merano to Lake Garda’ with my girlfriend. We skipped the first two stages and arrived at Caldaro. From here it took four days via Coredo, Molveno and Ponte Arche to Riva del Garda.

The further south we went the sunnier and more beautiful it became. The anticipation of our hiking tour ‘From Meran to Lake Garda’ grew bigger and bigger. In the afternoon we arrived in bright sunshine at the Meran City Hotel. A very nice city hotel. After we moved into our very bright, spacious room we strolled through the beautiful historical city of Merano. At 6.30pm Johannes and Andrea gave the tour briefing in the hotel. They did a great job. They ran through every day of the hiking tour with us. So we felt very well prepared and were already looking forward to our first day of hiking tomorrow morning.
