Long-distance hiking with pleasure

Following your heart's desire – step by step
Hikers on an alpine meadow from Steeg to Landeck

There are journeys that change us. Journeys that are not measured in kilometres, but in moments: the first glimpse of a quiet valley, the feeling of warm mountain sunshine on your face, or the gentle rhythm of your footsteps that suddenly becomes meditation. This is exactly what long-distance hiking is all about, one of the most original and at the same time most modern forms of travel.

More and more people are discovering the joy of travelling slowly. Trails that stretch over days or even weeks not only give us impressive landscapes, but also something that is often lacking in everyday life: time. Time for yourself, time for real thoughts, time for nature.

What makes long-distance hiking so special

1. A journey to oneself

Long-distance hiking brings special moments of clarity. Step by step, your head becomes lighter, your thoughts calmer, and the here and now more intense. Many long-distance hiking trails are therefore not only scenic highlights, but also mental ones.

2. Europe's infinite diversity

Europe is a paradise for long-distance hikers – with well-marked trails, regional cuisine, sustainable tourism and cultural highlights. Every trail tells its own story.

Alpine crossings – alpine, panoramic and full of mountain moments

Madeira & Canary Islands – Atlantic panoramas, laurel forests and subtropical nature.

Alpe-Adria Trail & Julian Alps – turquoise rivers, secluded mountain landscapes, Mediterranean flair.

South Tyrol & Tyrol – high mountain trails, romantic alpine huts, mountain lakes.

Portugal (Alentejo & Algarve) – coastlines, dunes, cork oak forests and quiet fishing villages.

3. Slowing down and connecting with nature

Long-distance hiking means arriving by walking. For many travellers, the feeling of finding their own rhythm is a powerful experience – a counterpoint to the fast pace of our everyday lives.

The most important differences in detail

FEATURE LONG-DISTANCE PATH LONG-DISTANCE TRAIL
GEOGRAPHICAL LEVEL Regional to national. National to international (e.g. European long-distance hiking trails).
LENGTH Usually more than 100 kilometres or a duration of at least 5 daily stages. The trails are usually more extensive and often connect regions, countries or even continents (e.g. the European long-distance hiking trails E1 to E12). They cover even longer distances, often several hundred or thousand kilometres.
OBJECTIVE The focus is often on getting to know a specific region. The focus is on covering long distances and cultural diversity.
INFRASTRUCTURE Often very well developed with a focus on tourist highlights. May vary; on very long routes, some sections are more pristine.
CERTIFICATION Often awarded the ‘Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland’ or similar distinction. Mostly coordinated by associations such as the European Ramblers' Association (ERA).

Alpe-Adria-Trail: From the glacier to the sea

The Alpe-Adria Trail begins at the foot of Austria's highest mountain, the Großglockner, and covers around 750 kilometres through Carinthia, Slovenia and Friuli-Venezia Giulia to the coast near Muggia. Forty-three stages connect Alpine landscapes with Mediterranean flair – a long-distance hiking trail that emphasises diversity.

The trails are pleasant to walk and well secured, making them suitable for leisure hikers. Along the way, they pass quiet mountain lakes, through impressive gorges such as the Soča Gorge, to traditional alpine huts and across sunny vineyards to the sea. Each stage offers a ‘jewel of the landscape’ – a small landmark that brings the nature, culture and history of the region to life in a special way.

The perfect moment is now

Many trends show that travellers increasingly long for mindfulness, closeness to nature, sustainable experiences and a slower pace of life. Long-distance hiking combines all of these things – and is also one of the most sustainable ways to travel.

The long-distance hiking trail is not just a route. It is a common thread running through landscapes, cultures and your own thoughts. And at some point, it happens: the trail becomes a story that you will tell for the rest of your life.

Bergeseen Trail in the Salzkammergut

The BergeSeen Trail stretches 374 kilometers across the Salzkammergut, connecting clear mountain lakes, hidden gorges, and expansive highlands into a route full of surprises. Each section has its own character: from narrow paths along rocky ridges to flat stretches through tranquil moorlands.

Well-marked signposts – the yellow “S” on a black background – reliably guide the way, making the route easy to follow even without prior local knowledge.

Depending on the stage, the hiking path caters to different difficulty levels and to everyone who wants to experience Austria’s nature in all its diversity – from ambitious long-distance hikers to relaxed explorers seeking peace off the beaten tourist paths.

E5 Long-Distance Hiking Path: Oberstdorf - Meran

Stretching 3,200 kilometers (1,988 miles), the E5 is one of Europe’s longest and most celebrated long-distance hiking paths. Its most popular section leads from Oberstdorf in the Allgäu region, across Tyrol, to Merano in South Tyrol.

Over approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles), hikers traverse the main Alpine ridge—along panoramic high paths, dramatic gorges, narrow ridges, and alpine passes. Highlights include the suspension bridge at Holzgau, the ridge hike on the Venet, the high-alpine Pitztaler Jöchl (9,826 ft), and crossing the Timmelsjoch into Italy.

This route is challenging, demanding sure-footedness, a head for heights, and solid physical fitness. Several stages can be shortened using valley alternatives or public transportation.

GR221 Majorca

The GR 221, or Gran Recorrido 221 in Spanish, spans roughly 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Port d’Andratx to Pollença, cutting across the Serra de TramuntanaHiking on Majorca here is a diverse journey of discovery: the trails are well-maintained, alternating between gentle hill paths, rocky stretches, and quiet country lanes. Along the way, you’ll pass charming villages like Valldemossa and Banyalbufar, the spiritual Lluc Monastery, and the masterfully restored dry-stone walls of the legendary “Ruta de Pedra en Sec.” Time and again, sweeping views unfold over the northwest coast, the Tramuntana peaks, and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. Sure-footedness and sturdy hiking boots are recommended, especially on the rocky mountain sections.

Merano High Mountain Trail

The Merano High Mountain Trail is an alpine loop through the Texelgruppe in South Tyrol. Covering about 100 kilometers, it can be completed in 5 to 8 days, with each stage also possible as a day tour. The trail is continuously marked with No. 24.

The route passes along high paths, alpine passes, and exposed sections secured with chains, ropes, or railings. Natural steps and constructed stairways ease ascents and descents, while stunning views over Merano, the Vinschgau Valley, and surrounding peaks appear at every turn. The hike requires surefootedness, a head for heights, and good physical condition, though some stages can be shortened via valley alternatives or public transportation.

The hiking path was established in 1976 with the founding of the Texelgruppe Nature Park, aiming both to preserve the alpine landscape and provide recreational opportunities for hikers.

Rota Vicentina & Alentejo

The Rota Vicentina stretches approximately 230 kilometers from Santiago do Cacém in the Alentejo region to Cabo de São Vicente in the Algarve. The trail network consists of two main routes: the Historical Way inland and the Fishermen’s Trail along the Atlantic coast.

The Fishermen’s Trail follows sandy coastal paths over dunes and cliffs, offering spectacular sea views, while the Historical Way passes through cork oak forests, rolling hills, and traditional villages. Highlights include Porto Covo, Odeceixe, Zambujeira do Mar, and Cabo de São Vicente.

The trails are well marked — blue and green along the coast, red and white inland — and mostly run on natural paths with moderate elevation changes.
