Wolgangsee panorama with hiker in the foreground

During our panorama hiking tour from North to South you experience the most beautiful facets of the Salzkammergut-region: Starting from the gentle hills on Lake Traunsee all the way into the mountain region of the Dachstein-glacier, this hiking tour leads you from the ‚outer‘ into the ‚inner´ Salzkammergut. You proceed via high-altitude paths and rugged peaks onto the high-plateau of the Höllengebirge-mountain range and onwards into the imperial town Bad Ischl. Then along the tracks of Empress Sissi to the turquoise-blue Lake Wolfgangsee and up to the Postalm, Austria’s largest alpine pasture area. Finally once again alpine flair awaits when crossing the ravine ‚Gosaukamm‘ – with the impressive Dachstein-glacier always in broad view.

Our hiking tour High-Altitude Paths, Lakes & Dachstein-Glacier tour in the beautiful Salzkammergut guarantees a real experience for mountaineers – because there are plenty of unforgettable mountain experiences on this tour. Over six daily stages, the route leads from the Traunsee, to the spa town of Bad Ischl and the next day to the wonderful Wolfgangsee. Continue to the Postalm area, where you will spend the night in a traditional mountain hut. The next day you head into the Gossau Valley and enjoy an eventful circular hike there on the last day of hiking. The tours always lead along multi-faceted hiking trails and alpine pasture paths with wonderful panoramas.

  • A sweet treat in Bad Ischl: For those of you with a sweet tooth, the famous Café Zauner in the ‘Imperial City’ has just the right indulgent experience to offer – the wonderful Zauner Stollen made from nougat, nuts and chocolate.
  • Moon landscape of the Höllengebirge: After a trip with the Feuerkogelbahn into the Höllengebirge and a hike on the high plateau, an extraordinary sight awaits you, which is similar to a lunar landscape.
  • Pure alpine enjoyment: On the sixth day of your hiking holiday, the route takes you to the Rinnbergalm, where the dairy farmer is waiting for you with fresh dairy products.
  • The crowning glory: On the last stage you can enjoy spectacular views of Lake Gosau at the foot of the ‘König Dachstein’ during the cable car ride into the Gosau Valley.

Even the journey to the Traunsee gives a first glimpse of the fabulous panoramas that await you over the coming days. Glittering lakes, spectacular high-altitude trails and views of the Dachstein-Glacier are your companions on the hiking tour in the Salzkammergut. The mountain hikes lead over good hiking and forest trails, some in alpine terrain. The daily stages are scheduled to last up to 5.5 hours.

Tip: This active trip in the Salzkammergut can also be experienced as a hiking holiday with a dog.

The route leads you above the deepest of all lakes in the Salzkammergut-region past the enchanting peninsula of Traunkirchen, a scenic gem, which has already inspired many painters and artists. From here you start a steep ascent to the first impressive peak, located just like an eagle’s nest high above the lake’s water surface. You proceed along a mountain trail via Mount Sonnstein into the saltworks-town of Ebensee.

By the Feuerkogelbahn-cable car you ascend effortlessly into the rocky karst-desert of the Höllengebirge-mountains. The surroundings here create a stark contrast to the bright green of the valley. You cross the former border into the ‚Salzburg-Salzkammergut‘ all the way to the shores of Lake Wolfgangsee, where the marvellous lake promenade invites to an extensive rest. Then through an idyllic nature reserve always along the lake with the renowned hotel ‚Weisses Rössl‘ and the prominent Mount Schafberg always in plain view.

Today you discover the unique alpine scenery of the Postalm-area: Through the gorge of the stream Zinkenbach you ascend through the forest to the initial alps and proceed further and further into the mountains. Via the Niedergaden-alp and the Thorhöhe-peak you cross extensive mountain pastures past grazing cattle and horses and reach a quaint mountain hut, where you will spend the night under the sparkling stars.

Hotel example: Huberhütte

An extensive alp-tour through idyllic high-alpine pastures you proceed past the highest peaks of the Osterhorn-mountains. Via lush pastures to the Rinnberg-alp, where the Alpine dairymaid awaits with fresh dairy products derived from the grazing livestock. As a finale to your hiking holiday already several highlights await. You ascend high up to the Zwiesel-alp along the Herrenweg-path, here the impressive mountain ridge of the ‚Salzburg Dolomites‘ greets you with its jagged summit-peaks and the white, snow covered area of the glacier appears within your grasp. You take a leisurely ride by cable car back into the valley and at the same time enjoy the fabulous view onto the glistening Lake Gosausee, reflecting grandly in its water area the one and only ‚King Dachstein‘.
