Discover the Rewards of Traveling Solo

Solo Hiking for Mind, Body, and Soul

Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to set off on a hike entirely on your own? To move at your own pace, fully take in the sights and sounds of nature, and simply let yourself be. Traveling solo offers pure freedom—spontaneity without compromises. Suddenly, the focus is on the here and now—and, most importantly, on your own needs.

Julia from Product Management took the leap and hiked solo along the sunny Algarve. We wanted to learn about her experience, what she discovered along the way, and the key things to keep in mind when traveling alone.

Plus, we’ve got some concrete travel recommendations that are perfect for solo hiking. And a little teaser: at the end of this post, there’s an exclusive bonus waiting for solo travelers from Eurohike.

The joy of traveling alone

Why we should all travel solo from time to time

Traveling alone gives us incredibly valuable experiences—ones we can only gain if we dare to take a solo break. A special sense of freedom spreads through you the moment you realize that you only need to listen to yourself. Your own wishes are acknowledged, your impulses followed. As a mother, friend, colleague, or partner, we’re used to considering others first. Everyday life often has a tight grip on us. Solo hiking is different.

But what actually holds us back from traveling alone? Sometimes it’s small uncertainties, sometimes it’s simply the hesitation to leave the familiar behind. And yet, that’s exactly what we often crave in everyday life: a genuine, uninterrupted break.

Want to make a spontaneous detour to a viewpoint? Stay a little longer at a picturesque rest spot? Pause to gaze at the sea, watch marmots in the Alps, or listen to the cheerful singing of birds? Maybe you feel the urge to stop at a cozy mountain hut, enjoy an apple strudel, and chat with the locals about life in the mountains. Then do it. Now is the perfect time for all of these little indulgences.

Often, the most beautiful experiences happen completely unplanned and spontaneously, just like the best conversations with like-minded travelers—before everyone goes their own way again. The magic is in the small things, in the simplicity. And more often than we realize, it doesn’t take much to feel a deep, lasting sense of contentment.

Solo Trip to the Algarve: Julia's Experience

In May 2025, Julia set off for Portugal’s southern coast. She admits she had a few quiet doubts at the start. Looking back now, she remembers an unforgettable short hiking vacation filled with truly wonderful experiences. Curious to learn more, we met up with Julia for a coffee and a chat.

What’s the added value of traveling alone compared to traveling with a partner? What do you see as the main difference?

It’s the independence and flexibility you get when traveling solo. I could hike entirely at my own pace, which makes a big difference on active vacations. Not everyone in a group—or even with a partner—has the same fitness level or the same drive to reach a summit quickly. When you’re on your own, you can go at a faster pace one moment and take it slower the next, exactly how you feel.

What surprised you the most?

That I never felt bored or lonely. The hikes kept me active all day, and along the way, I met so many friendly people. In the evenings, I could fully enjoy some quiet and relaxation after a long, rewarding day.

What did you learn from your experience?

That we often underestimate ourselves. I realized that my doubts were unfounded, and it felt amazing to step out of my comfort zone and try something new.

Why do you think traveling solo is worthwhile? Why should someone give this experience a try?

It might sound cliché, but you get to know yourself better, and I think it’s important to be able to enjoy your own company in life. The freedom to decide on your own how long to linger at a viewpoint for photos or which restaurant to eat at is a wonderful feeling.

Who would you recommend solo traveling to?

From my experience, I can say: I would recommend it to everyone. Whether you’re seeking peace and quiet or enjoy meeting people, everyone can get something out of traveling solo, because you can tailor the experience entirely according to your own ideas and desires.

What should women keep in mind when traveling alone?

In my opinion, women can generally feel safe traveling alone in Europe, especially when exploring nature outside of big cities. Still, there are a few things I always keep in mind. I avoid being out alone at night or in the dark, and I make it a point to share my location on my phone with a partner or family member. I also stay in regular contact with someone I trust, so there’s always someone who knows where I am.

Finally, could you share your best tips for solo travelers?

Fully embrace the experience and see the journey as an opportunity. Pay attention to your own thoughts and feelings along the way and enjoy the independence. If you ever crave company, simply be open to meeting others. You’ll be surprised at the friendly connections you can make with fellow solo travelers, and you can share experiences before continuing on your own. To capture your impressions and enjoy them later, I recommend bringing a small notebook and keeping a travel journal.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR YOUR SOLO ADVENTURE

South Tyrolean Wine & Alpine Pasture Trail

Hike through lush vineyards, along ancient irrigation channels, and across blooming alpine meadows. Sounds like a dream? well, it truly is. Italian flair blends effortlessly with alpine charm, accompanying you throughout your journey in sun-soaked South Tyrol. Stroll through the charming, arcaded streets of Bolzano, treat yourself to an espresso and homemade gelato, and soak in the relaxed atmosphere. On scenic hikes to romantic alpine pastures, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views and traditional mountain cuisine. Along the Strada del Vino, shaded paths and excellent wines await, while in the spa town of Merano, elegant architecture and beautiful parks invite you to explore. This 7-day tour offers plenty of variety. If you prefer a shorter introduction, a 4-day option is also available—and who knows, you might enjoy it so much that you decide to extend your stay on the spot!

From Garmisch to Merano

An Alpine crossing isn’t for solo travelers? We’re here to prove otherwise. Our “light” Alpine crossing from Garmisch to Merano makes this unforgettable experience absolutely possible for solo hikers—and you’ll even cross international borders along the way. Starting in Bavaria, the route leads you through the stunning mountain landscapes of Tyrol and into Italy. Along the way, you’ll visit the impressive Partnach Gorge, hike up to the Three-Countries Border Marker, and marvel at the submerged church in Lake Resia. Arriving in Merano, you’ll have every reason to feel proud. Celebrate the end of your journey with an Aperol spritz and a crispy wood-fired pizza—an experience you won’t soon forget.

Wachau World Heritage Trail

Following the beautiful blue Danube, scenic hillside trails lead you from one charming village to the next. At traditional Heurigen (local wine taverns), locals and travelers come together to chat, savor regional dishes, and enjoy the season’s young wines, a hearty local lunch, or specialties made from the famous Wachau apricots. During apricot blossom season, a truly special natural spectacle unfolds as the Wachau transforms into a sea of soft white and pink blooms. This is an especially wonderful time for solo travel. The trails are peaceful, as the main vacation season has yet to begin, and the beautiful scenery—combined with the sweet fragrance of the blossoms—creates a truly uplifting atmosphere. This tour is available in two options. Whether you choose the 7-day or 5-day version, the grand finale is the same: a scenic boat ride on the Danube back to your starting point. It’s the perfect opportunity to reflect on the past few days as the vineyards drift by along the riverbanks.

Algarve – Based in One Hotel

Experience the Algarve’s captivating coastal landscapes, sweeping Atlantic views, and expansive nature reserves on this hiking vacation. Based in one hotel in the charming town of Tavira, you’ll set out on scenic loop hikes that take you to authentic villages, hidden gems, the stunning Ilha de Tavira, and the Ceramica Valley. Between hikes, enjoy a leisurely stroll through Tavira’s narrow streets, soak in the relaxed southern rhythm, and unwind on the region’s beautiful sandy beaches.
