Food lovers will delight as well: the area around Lake Trasimeno is known for its fine red wine, Trevi produces excellent olive oil, and Spoleto is renowned for its world-class truffles. The high trail around Lake Trasimeno promises sunny hiking with stunning lake views. The Via Francigena will guide you south, passing through Assisi, a major pilgrimage center, and leading to the Spoleto Bridge, which Goethe once crossed on his travels.
Whether strolling through the verdant orchards of South Tyrol, exploring the rolling vineyards of Tuscany, circling the azure expanse of Lake Garda, or journeying toward the Adriatic, a hiking tour in Italy uniquely combines the thrill of outdoor adventure with the irresistible allure of la dolce vita.
Your journey begins in the charming town of Passignano sul Trasimeno, where you can enjoy a delightful first evening in the many local restaurants. You'll hike over hills and through valleys along Lake Trasimeno until you reach the enchanting town of Magione. On day three, your destination is the pilgrimage city of Assisi, starting with a train ride to Bastia Umbra.
The route on the following day is guided by Monte Subasio. You’ll hike through ancient forests to Spello, and then take the train to Foligno. Continuing along the Franciscan Path, you’ll traverse olive groves and hills, with a rest at the impressive Sant'Eraclio fortress before spending the night in Trevi. Historic castles and centuries-old olive trees will lead you through Campello and Poreta. The adventure culminates with an intriguing arrival in Spoleto via an underground transportation system.
Between pilgrimage culture and architecture in Assisi: The city is renowned for its well-preserved old town, characterized by charming cobblestone streets and historic buildings. A notable highlight is the Basilica of San Francesco, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its breathtaking frescoes that vividly portray the life of Saint Francis.
The picturesque backdrop of Lake Trasimeno: The shimmering lake is embraced by stunning landscapes. Its serene, crystal-clear waters offer a peaceful retreat, while the small islands, especially the enchanting Isola Maggiore, are a haven of untouched beauty. The sunsets over the water are truly spectacular, casting a spell of magic and tranquility over the scene.
Taste olive oil in Trevi: Perched on a hill, the city offers stunning views of the surrounding valley and lush green hills. Trevi is renowned for its olive oil production, so be sure to sample the high-quality extra virgin oil. The historic city center enchants with its well-preserved buildings, including the Church of San Francesco and the Palazzo Comunale. The local atmosphere is best enjoyed at Piazza Mazzini.
The rolling hills of Umbria shape the hiking stages, offering a manageable elevation gain that classifies the route as moderate. With stages reaching up to 16 kilometers, you'll have ample time to delight in the scenic beauty that unfolds along your journey.
