Active Adventures for your Summer Vacation

Every year, the same question comes up: Where should we go for summer vacation? For many families, summer travel means heading to the nearest all-inclusive resort with kids' clubs, blaring music, animation teams, and massive buffets. But what if family vacation looked completely different this year? Imagine this: crisp mountain air, active days in nature, wildlife spotting, shared discoveries, and a family photo at a mountain summit or a rustic alpine hut.

When you go hiking in the mountains, diverse trails far from the tourist crowds await active families. It is the perfect way to combine physical activity and relaxation after an eventful and sometimes challenging school year, letting the small worries of everyday life fade into the distance. Are you wondering which destinations are ideal for a family hiking vacation? Where can you find kid-friendly routes? What activities are available besides hiking, and which accommodations are truly family-friendly? If so, you’ve come to the right place with this travel blog!

Real Family Time in the Mountains

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, one thing often falls by the wayside: true family time, where parents and children can fully immerse themselves in discovery and focus entirely on the here and now. During the school year, life is dictated by homework, projects, sports clubs, riding lessons, family visits, birthday parties, dentist appointments, and the weekly grocery run. Both children and parents are left with very little room to breathe. The constant balancing act between career and family is all too familiar for many moms and dads. We’ve all been there: packing lunches, rushing to buy birthday gifts, and playing chauffeur for extracurricular activities. That is why, when vacation rolls around, we often find ourselves wishing for one thing: less. Less scheduling, less noise, less obligation.

Time in nature gives us exactly that. Quiet paths, bubbling brooks, and glimpses of wildlife create a space where the shared family experience, the laughter, the fun, and the light in your children's eyes takes center stage. There is something special about watching children discover nature through play, experiencing plants, animals, and the environment firsthand. Almost by accident, and completely without a textbook, they make new discoveries that become the perfect story to share in the classroom once the summer break is over.

How Do I Find the Right Vacation for My Family?

It isn't always easy to figure out which destinations and routes are suitable for families or specifically right for your own children. That is exactly why our product management experts have put a lot of thought into this, personally hiking every single mile of our trails. This allows us to ensure that the routes are kid-friendly, maintain high safety standards, and offer activities that promise plenty of fun. We guarantee it: these paths were not only scouted by our adult experts but were also personally tested and approved by their children. If you are planning an active vacation with kids, we recommend asking yourself the following questions:

Are the stages right for my children?

Route planning is the foundation of every family vacation. While the internet is full of suggestions, they often lack specific details on whether they are truly suitable for smaller feet. It is vital to focus on a few key factors: total elevation gain, distance, trail conditions, and safety features. Once these basics are covered, it comes down to your judgment as a parent. Every child is different. Some eight-year-olds can easily handle longer distances, while others, even older children, might reach their limits more quickly. General age recommendations are only helpful to a certain extent. We suggest taking a few family day hikes beforehand and paying close attention to distance and elevation changes. This will give you a clear sense of your children's fitness levels and what they’re comfortable with.

Are the trails safe for my kids?

This is the most important factor. As parents, you can only truly enjoy a relaxing hiking vacation if you know the routes are safe for your children. It is essential to choose well-maintained, wide trails where the little ones can run, jump, and laugh freely. On every Eurohike family hiking tour, this level of safety is a given.

Which accommodations meet our needs and expectations?

Parents and children look for places where families are warmly welcomed and where things can be a bit more fun and livelier. Mom and dad want to enjoy a relaxed dinner while the kids burn off energy on the slide or swings after a children’s meal. On-site animals like goats, cows, sheep, horses, or cats also turn downtime after a hike into an exciting and often educational experience. In the pool, there is plenty of room for swimming and games of water polo. When selecting our accommodations, we look for exactly these things: family-friendly dining and recreational facilities that delight both parents and children alike.

What adventures are waiting to be discovered along the trail?

While fresh air and hiking together are the main focus, it is very important for children to have exciting activities waiting for them along the route. Small adventures provide motivation and make every stage feel special. Having a specific goal to reach each day keeps things interesting, whether it is a swimming pool, a high-ropes course, a petting zoo, centuries-old castles, or refreshing lakes. These stops give every hike a clear structure and keep the children curious about what is around the next corner. Of course, cozy places to stop for a break are also essential. Whether it is Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes), savory dumplings, pizza, or ice cream, enjoying good food is a big part of any vacation. This is the perfect time to indulge and let the usual mealtime rules slide a little.

The Best Destinations for Family Hiking Vacations

Through Alpine Pastures in Salzkammergut for families

The adventure kicks off at the picturesque Lake Wolfgangsee, which practically begs you to jump in for a refreshing swim. Soon, the trails lead you up into impressive alpine pasturelands where time seems to slow down and the stress of daily life simply fades away. Sheep, goats, cows, deer, and ibex—this is a place where children can get up close to animals in their natural habitat. For those curious about how cheese is made, a visit to the Schnitzhofalm is a must. Here, the traditional alpine craft of cheesemaking continues, passed down through generations. A standout highlight of the vacation is an overnight stay at the rustic Poschnhütte hut on the Genneralm. For this specific journey, children should have good stamina for distances of up to 10.5 miles (17 kilometers). In return, the rewards are endless. The included Salzkammergut Card promises fun and adventure at numerous attractions, from a ride on the historic Schafbergbahn cog railway up Mount Schafberg to a visit to the “Abarena” kids’ adventure park or a thrilling ride on a summer toboggan run.

Lechweg Path for Families

The Lechweg follows one of the last wild river landscapes in Europe, and let’s be honest: children and water are the perfect match. Right on the first day, the picturesque Formarinsee in Lech am Arlberg is waiting to be explored. In Holzgau, your family can cross one of the longest and most spectacular pedestrian suspension bridges in Europe together. The excitement doesn’t stop there. Outdoor pools and observation towers offer plenty of ways to cool off and stay entertained, while cable cars whisk you high up to over 6,500 feet. For a truly grand finale, visit the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle. This fairytale landmark makes little princes and princesses feel like they have stepped right into a Disney movie.

E5: Mini Transalp for Families

Those who think crossing the Alps is not suitable for families with children are mistaken. For active, adventure-loving kids, the mini Transalp along the E5 European long-distance path is a true mountain adventure. Of course, the original route has been adapted to make it family-friendly, ensuring both safety and stage lengths are perfectly suited to families. Wherever possible, however, you still follow sections of the original route of the famous long-distance trail from Imst to Merano. Once you arrive, children can rightfully feel proud of what they have achieved and will have definitely earned a scoop of authentic, homemade gelato!
