The essentials at a glance

Family-friendly walking tour along the Lechweg trail from Lech am Arlberg to Füssen through Austria and Germany. Highlights include the sparkling Formarinsee lake, one of Europe's longest pedestrian suspension bridges at Holzgau, optional summit climb to Jöchelspitze (2200m), and scenic alpine meadows. Daily distances average 11-14 km with moderate elevation changes. Accommodation in 3*** hotels with breakfast, luggage transfer, guest cards for cable cars and buses included.

An exceptional nature experience awaits during our hiking holiday along the Lechweg-path: You accompany the glistening river Lech from its source near Lake Formarinsee situated in the Austrian town Lech am Arlberg, through one of Europe‘s last wild river sceneries, all the way to the Lechfall waterfall in Füssen in the Bavarian Allgäu region. On your way, you will discover the untamed beauty of Vorarlberg and Tyrol. You will cross a spectacular suspension bridge and take a cable car up to the mountain peaks. Listen to the gurgling waterfalls and take a break at sparkling swimming lakes. Once you reach your destination in Füssen, it is worth taking a trip to King Ludwig's fairytale castles and a boat trip on Lake Forggensee.

A unique adventure awaits you on this hiking holiday for families along the Lechweg Path: From Lake Formarin near the Arlberg, where the Lech rises as a small mountain stream, you follow its course through alpine landscapes, gentle valleys, and traditional villages all the way to Füssen in Bavaria. Along the way, you encounter roaring waterfalls, lush alpine meadows, and shimmering mountain lakes. Whether wading barefoot through the cold water, observing wildlife in the floodplains, or simply enjoying the silence of the mountains – both children and adults discover nature with all their senses. At the end, the Allgäu welcomes you with the Lechfall and the famous royal castles – a fairytale finale to an unforgettable week of hiking.

  • Wild Lech in the Tiroler Lech Nature Park: One of the last wild river landscapes in Europe – fascinating, pristine, and full of life.
  • Spectacular suspension bridge in Holzgau: An impressive crossing of the wild and romantic Höhenbachtal on one of Austria’s longest and highest pedestrian suspension bridges.
  • Outdoor pools & lookout towers: Refreshing stops and wide panoramic views make every stage an experience.
  • Cable car & ascent to Jöchlspitze (2,000 m): An unforgettable highlight with alpine views – ideal for families with a spirit of discovery.

The tour follows well-maintained paths, natural trails, and partly paved forest roads. Daily walking times between 3.5 and 5 hours are ideal for families with a basic level of fitness. Some sections require a bit of sure-footedness, but can easily be bypassed if needed – for example at the suspension bridge. Gentle climbs alternate with relaxed valley walks, and thanks to plenty of rest areas, playgrounds, and nature stations, boredom is guaranteed to stay away. Comfortable accommodations ensure relaxing evenings, while the Lech accompanies your family from the high mountains all the way to the fairytale castles.
