Brilon – Willingen
From the Rothaarsteig’s entrance gate at the Briloner market square the trail leads via Borbergs’ churchyard to two scenic highlights: the Ginsterkopf top with stunning views over the Sauerland region and the ’Bruchhauser Steinen’, a prehistoric rock formation. Past ‚Richtplatz’ square, a historic venue of jurisdiction, you arrive at Willingen.
Willingen – Winterberg
On old border paths you reach mount ‚Langenberg’, the highest mountain in Northrhine-Westphalia. The across the nature reserve ‚Neuer Hagen’, a unique high-up heath teeming with blueberry and cranberry bushes. Finally past ‚Ruhrquelle’ spring you arrive at Winterberg.
Winterberg - Schanze
Via the ‚Kahlen Asten’ top you pass ‚Lennequelle’ spring. You will now leave the ridge and walk on the Hochsauerland-valley trail to ‚Schmallenberg-Schanze’.
Past the alter stone, used for pagan rituals and sacrifice, via Latrop to the Millionenbank (millionair’s bench) and return onto the ridgeway. Over the ‚Heidkopf’ top, past the ‚Somborn’ spring and the ‚Margarethenstein’, onwards to the Rhine-Weser observation point with marvellous views over the watershed of the two rivers.
Through the nature reserves ‚Schwarzbachtal’ and ‚Heinsberger’ heath, the Rothaarsteig leads to the ‚Dreiherrenstein’ situated on the border of the Sieger- and Wittgensteiner Land region. Past the ‚Ferndorf’ spring you get to the castle ruins of Ginsburg with striking panoramic views.
Lützel – Lahnhof
The trail runs past three of the nine in springs which rise here on the Rothaarsteig: the rivers Eder, Lahn und Sieg have their source here.
Lahnhof – Wilgersdorf
Past the Ilsequelle spring you walk over the ‚Haincher Höhe’ top, then the ‚Tiefenrother Höhe’, the longest railway tunnel in Northrhine- Westphalia, until Wilgersdorf.
Wilgersdorf – Dillenburg
Past Fellerdilln, Rodenbach and Manderbach you descend to the end destination of the Rothaarsteig, to Dillenburg.
The ‚Rothaarsteig’ leads through evergreen forest landscape. The majority of the tour consists of small rural trails or wide walking paths, only short segments with rustic tracks. Daily walks of 14 to 23 km only require good basic fitness level.
