The trail leads through narrow gorges, across table mountains, and to Königstein Fortress. Daily stages up to 5.5 hours require good fitness and surefootedness. Accommodation in 3-4 star hotels with breakfast and luggage transfer included.

The Painter’s Path in Saxon Switzerland takes you through one of Germany’s most captivating landscapes. Amid striking sandstone cliffs, deep gorges, and wide plateaus, you’ll follow in the footsteps of artists who once drew inspiration from this dramatic scenery. Your tour begins in Pirna, leading you through the Liebethal Valley and the rock gate in Uttewalde Valley to the famous Bastei Bridge. Along the way, quiet river valleys such as the Polenztal and the spectacular rock towers of the Schrammsteine add variety and charm. High above the Elbe, the mighty Königstein Fortress rises, surrounded by picturesque villages with elegant baroque churches. Spa towns like Rathen, Bad Schandau, and Gohrisch welcome you with inviting overnight stays, enriched by experiences such as a nostalgic tram ride through the Kirnitzsch Valley or a ferry crossing on the Elbe. After a week filled with discoveries, you return to Pirna with lasting impressions and unforgettable memories.

The Malerweg Trail is considered one of the most impressive loop hiking routes in Germany. On this nine-day tour, you will experience the full diversity of Saxon Switzerland: from quiet valleys and mystical rock formations to airy viewpoints high above the Elbe. Your tour begins in Pirna, from where you hike through shady gorges, across wide plateaus, and along the famous Bastei Bridge. Time and again, spectacular views open up over the striking sandstone cliffs and the sweeping bends of the Elbe. Along the way, you encounter charming spa towns, rustic mountain huts on the table mountains, and historical landmarks such as Königstein Fortress. A nostalgic ride on the Kirnitzschtalbahn, leisurely ferry crossings, and encounters with regional hospitality round off this varied week of hiking before you return to Pirna after seven stages.

  • Bastei Bridge & Königstein Fortress: Icons of the region with magnificent views over the distinctive rock formations of Saxon Switzerland.
  • Schrammsteine & Pfaffenstein: Adventurous trails, airy ladders, and impressive rock formations – combining panoramic views with a touch of thrill.
  • Kirnitzschtalbahn: A historic ride through the wild and romantic valley, offering a unique way to experience nature and landscape.
  • Schöna “Bauernbarock” Church: A small architectural gem in a picturesque setting, charmingly conveying culture and history.

You will hike on varied natural paths, rock trails, and well-marked routes of the premium hiking trail “Malerweg.” Daily stages of 4 to 6 hours require a solid basic level of fitness. Especially in rocky sections – such as at the Schrammsteine or the Pfaffenstein – sure-footedness and a head for heights are essential. The route offers an ideal combination of physical activity, natural beauty, and cultural experiences. Cozy accommodations, mountain inns, and national park information points provide comfort and orientation along the way.
