The essentials at a glance

The Altmühltal Panorama Path from Treuchtlingen to Eichstätt offers easy walking through Germany's second-largest nature park. Discover the iconic 'Twelve Apostles' limestone formations, explore Solnhofen's 140-million-year-old fossils, and visit baroque Eichstätt with its Willibaldsburg castle. Daily distances range from 14-25 km with well-maintained paths through forests, juniper heaths, and along the meandering Altmühl river. The tour includes accommodation, breakfast, and luggage transfer.

Do you have questions about this tour?

On your walk along the Altmühltal-Panorama path steep jaggered Dolomite-rocks, sun-kissed juniper heaths, soft river valleys and extensive forests will line your way. The nature park ‚Altmühltal’ is also mainly known for its romantic scenery and hence predestined for a comfortable week of walking amidst unspoilt nature. On top of that you come across a landscape steeped in history and culture: impressive ramparts, reconstructed forts and spectacular treasure troves are testimony to Celtic and Roman times. Castles and palaces built by nobility, magnificent churches and monasteries built by prince-archbishops. In the Altmühltal valley you will also enjoy many culinary delights: from tasty saussage specialities all the way to the local hops in the shape of numerous delicious beers.

The charming Treuchtlingen serves as the starting point for the trip, which is perfect for leisure hikers. Via the vantage points Teufelskanzel and Hollerstein, you go along the Altmühl to the historic Pappenheim. Have your camera ready on day 3 of the tour! Although the entire stage is lined with great views, the rock formations of the “Twelve Apostles” are a special highlight.

Enjoy the warm atmosphere in the unspoiled Dollnstein, soak up the lush green of the forests and juniper heaths and let yourself be enchanted by the baroque Eichstätt. Those who like hearty cuisine will love the culinary delights of this region. But of course there is something for every taste. Because of the hops and barley cultivation, the beers of the region are also well-known and just crying out to be tasted.

  • Idyllic hikes in the middle of the nature park: Along the river, past unique rock formations and traditional walls - on the Altmühltal-Panoramaweg unspoiled nature awaits you as a balance to everyday life! Enchanting high-altitude hikes: It doesn't always have to be mountain ranges. In the Altmühltal, too, people “hike high up” - for this they are rewarded with magnificent views.
  • "Twelve Apostles" natural monument: They look a bit like free-standing towers and scientists describe them as the remnants of the tropical Jurassic Sea. Either way, the “Twelve Apostles” are a real eye-catcher!
  • Castles and palaces along the route: This is where the nobility once lived! The partly restored and partly dilapidated castles bear witness to this. Prince-bishops had beautiful residences built, which still shine in baroque splendor today. Come with us on a journey into the past.
  • Bavarian beer & hearty ‘Brotzeit’: If you travel to Bavaria, you can hardly avoid beer in its many forms - as wheat beer, pilsner or in the non-alcoholic version. Around 25 breweries produce the popular barley juice in the region.

The route guidance is relatively easy to master, there are no notably difficult passages. The stage Pappenheim to Dollnstein on day 3 is very long at 25 km, but there are possibilities for shortcuts. The relaxed tours and the great views make this trip a real pleasure!

Sustainably on the go

Our contribution to climate protection

  • Active vacations are among the most environmentally friendly and healthiest ways to travel. Traveling on foot means moving in a climate-conscious way while conserving resources.

  • Our carefully selected accommodations, like us, are committed to lived sustainability. They are deeply rooted in their regions, work with local suppliers, provide attractive employment opportunities for local residents, and thereby strengthen local value creation.

  • With the Eurohike On Tour app, we offer a digital version of our travel documents, allowing you to navigate confidently while on the road. By moving to digital formats, we help conserve valuable natural resources.

  • Eurohike has been certified as a sustainable tour operator with the internationally recognized Travelife certification. To achieve this, more than 261 requirements were carefully met.

  • Even though hiking vacations (and cycling vacations with Eurobike) are among the most climate-friendly forms of travel, they still generate CO₂ emissions. These are carefully measured using the “Carmacal” calculator. Through our commitment to selected climate protection projects, we aim to give something back to the environment.
