Get to know Sweden from its most beautiful side on a hiking tour along the Gotaleden long-distance hiking trail. It takes you from the maritime city of Gothenburg through beautiful nature reserves with green fields and blooming meadows. You can enjoy peacefully vast landscapes and wonderfully fresh air while getting to know the region and wildlife of Northern Europe. Whether it's idyllic birdsong from the trees or salmon in the river, you can feel the vitality and power of nature everywhere. An interesting change of pace is a visit to the water powered Hillefors sand mill and the historic castles that lie along the way. Also make sure to stop at a typical café and try Swedish specialities like the famous cinnamon buns Kanelbullar!

After you have explored Gothenburg, the first hiking stage takes you to the Skatås recreation area and the Delsjön nature reserve. From the Knipeflågsbergen plateau and Mount Getryggen, the route leads to Jonsered and Lerum. Along the river Säveån you reach the village of Tollered. Equally enchanting is the shore of the Mjörn River, along which you walk to Nolhaga Castle and on to Alingsås.

  • Gothenburg: The Swedish harbour city invites you to enjoy an exciting sightseeing tour and romantic walks past green alleys and pretty canals. Shopping fans should head to the Kungsportsavenyn shopping street and adrenaline junkies should visit the Liseberg amusement park with its rides and sculpture garden.
  • Nääs Castle: This imposing structure sits high above Lake Sävelången in Lerum. It dates from the 16th century and was remodelled in the 19th century in the classicist style.
  • Nolhaga Castle: The historic Nolhaga Castle is also magnificent. There is an art exhibition worth seeing and the English Garden awaits you.
  • Alingsås: At the end of your hike you can visit the beautiful village of Alingsås. With its picturesque wooden houses and cosy cafés, it exudes typical Swedish charm.

The route takes you along good hiking and forest trails, located in nature reserves. You can enjoy magnificent views of meadows and lakes while hiking in peace and quiet. The daily stages are scheduled to take up to seven hours. There are occasional small climbs. If you have a solid basic fitness level, you will be well prepared for this hike.

Itinerary at a glance

Explore Gothenburg with its charming canals and take some time for a shopping spree. Rivers and lakes alternate with impressive castles. Enjoy a Kanelbullar (cinnamon roll) in one of the many cafes in Alingsås.

Explore the many sights and attractions of the harbour town during an extensive stroll along the little canals and parks located in the beautiful historic centre.

Your initial tour leads you to the Outdoor-recreation centre Skatås. After only a few kilometres you reach the Delsjön nature reserve, the largest one of its kind located in the surroundings of Göteborg. After that you pass the Knipeflåg-mountains, a giant plateau, from where the ascent of Mount Getryggen awaits. Enjoy the view onto Göteborg from high up before you continue to the Kåsjön-lakes. Here we recommend a break and a refreshing swim, before you reach Jonsered, a little village with ample history. Short train or bus ride to Lerum.

Always following the river Säveån to the nature reserve with the same name. Enjoy the beautiful route, along the way bird song, salmon in the river and lovely picnic spots await. We also recommend a visit to the sand mill Hillefors, the only mill powered by water worldwide. Again and again, you have the opportunity to observe wild animals such as ducks, fawns or kingfisher during your hiking tour towards Nääs. Please also visit the palace in Nääs, before your route leads you into the little village of Tollered.

For the finale of your holiday the program features once more diverse scenery with opportunies for refreshing swims. Along the shores of Mjörns into the Nolhagaviken nature reserve featuring a bountiful bird population. A little later you walk past Nolhaga palace, where you get to visit interesting art exhibitions and the English garden. Shortly after the castle you finally reach Alingsås, the final destination of your holiday, which will impress you with beautiful wooden houses and offering many traditional cafés.

You always walk on nice hiking- and forest paths across meadows and through nature reserves, accompanied by marvellous views onto countless lakes. A good basic fitness level is sufficient for the daily tours with walking times of up to 7 hours with occasional little ascents.
