Imagine this picture: green pastures and rugged peaks. At the foot of the mountains idyllic little lakes are dotted around. In addition, there are cultural highlights as far as the eye can see. Does that sound fantastic? Great, because it doesn’t only exist in your dreams! This seven-day hiking tour from Eurohike takes in natural and cultural spectacles. You’ll take in the Salzkammergut with its idyllic lakes and unmistakable locations as well as the Ausseerland, a real gem.

Details of the hiking tour in the Salzkammergut & Ausseerland

Hike from one lake to the next, and in between wander around the foot of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Dachstein. On this tour you hike to the Falkensteinwand, around Lake Altaussee and climb the imposing Loser. From there you will have uninterrupted views over the Tote Gebirge, the Dachstein and the Grimming. From the quaint Bad Aussee, the hike takes you further into the wild and romantic Koppental.

Tour tip: Stop in Koppenbrüllerhöhle and take the ship to the historic town of Hallstatt. It’s well worth a visit, promise!

Highlights of the hiking tour in the Salzkammergut & Ausseerland at a glance:

  • Sail on the Wolfgangsee: Take the boat across the glass-like turquoise-green waters – or walk along the lakeside path – to St Gilgen. Enjoy the view of the Mozart village!
  • The Sparber summit: Hike to the Schartenalm. It is idyllically nestled between steep rocky peaks.  
  • Up to the Blaa Alm: At the foot of the Loser massif you can taste the tender meat of the grazing cattle and fish from the clear lakes, made according to old Ausseer recipes.

Useful information about the hike in the Salzkammergut & Ausseerland

You make your own way to St. Wolfgang, which is well known far and wide, before you begin this seven-day hiking tour. On your trip you hike on well-developed trails. The day tours take an average of three and a half hours. On the fourth day the route will take you through the imperial town of Bad Ischl, where the beloved former Austrian Emperor Franz and Empress Sisi celebrated their engagement. Follow in the footsteps of the Soleleitungsweg to Bad Aussee and finally on to Altaussee.

Tip: Do not miss the fresh fish from the smokehouse in Altaussee!

Itinerary

Boat ride to St. Wolfgang. During your walk along the high route to the ‚Falkensteinwand’ you enjoy the view of the lake. On the romantic path by the lake you stroll to the Mozart-village St. Gilgen. Return journey by boat.

Starting from the banks of the lake Wolfgangsee you walk up the hill to the first alpine pastures, passing a wild animal preserve. On the back side of the ‚Sparber’-top you walk to the ‚Schartenalm’, which is idyllically situated between towering rugged mountain tops. On your way back you should stop by at a typical small Austrian restaurant, which offers homebred venison dishes and an incredible view of St. Wolfgang.

By bus you go to Bad Ischl and then you walk along the historic brine pipeline path into the valley ‚Rettenbachtal’ and up to the alpine pasture ‚Blaa’ which is at the foot of the Loser massif. Here the people cook in the Old Ausseer style with products from the green pastures and the clear lakes.

During a comfortable hike you walk round lake Altauseer See. After your lake-hike you should not miss to taste a fresh char from the smokehouse. Alternatively, you have the possibility to climb up the Loser from where you have a clear view over the ‚Totes Gebirge’, the ‚Dachstein’ and the ‚Grimming’.

From Bad Aussee your path leads you through the wild and romantic valley ‚Koppental’, where we recommend to visit the cave ‚Koppenbrüller Höhle’. By boat you cross the lake Hallstätter See and reach the World Cultural Heritage town Hallstatt with many incredible sights. Back to Bad Aussee by train.

Tour character

Most of the time you walk on pasture paths and on well maintained footpaths with fantastic views.  We recommend a good basic fitness level for walking days of up to 5.5 hours. Some of the hikes can be shortened or extended according to your wishes. This tour is perfect to enjoy the hightlights of the Salzkammergut in all its facets.

  • By train to Salzburg and then by bus (approx. 1 hour) to lake Wolfgangsee. Or by train to Bad Ischl and in approx. 30 minutes to lake Wolfgangsee. Pick up service from the bus stop by the hotel possible.
  • Parking Wolfgangsee: free hotel car park available. No reservation required.
  • Return journey from Bad Aussee to lake Wolfgangsee by train and bus in approx 1.5 hrs.

Gute Streckenbeschreibungen, wunderschöne Landschaften. Hotel Erzherzog Johann ist ein Highlight. Es bleibt zwischen den Wanderungen nicht genug Zeit, die vielen Angebote der Region auszukosten (Dachstein, Eisriesenwelt, Seilbahnen, Salzburg, usw.) - ein Grund wiederzukommen! Sehr gute Kommunikation mit Florian Frisch, der uns die Reise so ermöglicht hat! Danke.

Perfekt organisiert!
Wunderschöne Region, vor allem das Ausseerland ist noch so ursprünglich und ruhig wie man es sich vorstellt. Die beiden Hotels entsprechen der Bezeichnung Charme voll und ganz, vor allem das Hotel Johann mit dem Wellnessbereich ist ein Genuss.
