Mystische Stimmung am Steirersee auf der Tauplitzalm

After a challenging 2020, I decided without further ado to use the beautiful late summer and recharge my body’s batteries. I changed my office chair for my hiking shoes and took a few days off on the hiking tour Styrian Salzkammergut, 7 days. Last year I was able to take a closer look at the tour from Garmisch to Meran, 8 days, this year my friend Max and I went to the Tauplitzalm, which has a reputation for being one of the most beautiful high plateaus in Europe.

And one thing in advance: it more than met my expectations! But it’ best to read for yourself.

The Tauplitzalm

The Tauplitzalm is the largest lake plateau in Central Europe and is a recreational area for all nature lovers. For mountain sports enthusiasts in summer as well as for winter sports enthusiasts, the Tauplitz offers breathtaking experiences in the middle of the Toten Gebirges. A large, diverse landscape awaits at 1,650 metres above sea level, and is hard to beat in terms of beauty. Hiking on the Tauplitzalm means biodiversity, crystal clear lakes and the associated relaxation for body and mind. Everyone gets their money’s worth! Whether leisurely walks, enjoyable hikes or demanding mountain tours: the Tauplitzalm meets the needs of every mountain lover.

By the way: The high plateau is also ideal for a hiking holiday with the family and offers countless adventures along the hiking trails.

Idyllic alpine hut scenery

The Tauplitzalm definitely provides the necessary refreshment between every hike. Because the high plateau is home to numerous rustic alpine huts. They shape the landscape in a very special way and invite you to linger.

So if you long for a traditional ‘Brettljause’, a hearty ‘Kasnockn’ or a sweet ‘Kaiserschmarrn’, you will definitely find what you are looking for in one of the many traditional mountain huts.

One hike, six lakes

One of the numerous highlights of the Tauplitzalm is definitely the 6-lake hike – of course my friend and I didn’t want to miss it!

We start directly from the hotel and head towards our first destination: the Großsee. The glittering surface of the water, in which the surrounding trees are reflected, already suggest that this hike still has some more to offer. We continue to the Märchensee and the Krallersee, two moor lakes that create a mystical atmosphere due to the light rain. We hike back in the direction of Tauplitzsee, a small but beautiful lake in the middle of numerous mountain huts.

The hike continues to the Steirersee, which is an absolute highlight of the tour. The view from the plateau to the picturesque, blue, glittering waters couldn’t be more beautiful. We decide to take a short break and make ourselves comfortable on the ‘Steirersee-Bankerl’. You could get used to this view.

We finally hike through species-rich pine trees to the Schwarzensee, which concludes our 6-lake hike.

Our conclusion: A great hike for young and old, which is especially cool in summer thanks to the many lakes.

Hiking tour in the Styrian Salzkammergut

The Tauplitzalm is definitely one of the highlights of the Eurohike hiking tour in the Styrian Salzkammergut in Austria. There is a reason why an additional day is planned on the lake plateau to be able to explore the beautiful landscape in the middle of the Toten Gebirges.

However, there are numerous other highlights to experience on the hiking tour. For example, the Predigstuhl, a steep summit at 2,543 metres with vast alpine pastures and lake formed by the glacier. Or the lake paradise of Ausseerland, where one piece of water follows the last.
