Do you have questions about this tour?

The GR221 is considered Mallorca’s most famous long-distance hiking trail and a true hiker’s paradise. This popular dry-stone wall route stretches across the Serra de Tramuntana from the north to the southwest of the island. Following ancient pilgrimage routes and mountain passes, the trail takes you past centuries-old terraced gardens, through holm oak forests, and through quiet mountain valleys. Monasteries and small artistic villages like Deià and Valldemossa lie along your path, as do the orange groves of Sóller. On the coast around Sant Elm, the view opens up to the offshore island of La Dragonera. In addition to comfortable hotels, you’ll stay at the historic Lluc Monastery and at the Refugis Tossal Verds and Ses Fontanelles, which are nestled in the heart of the mountains. In Port d’Andratx, one of Mallorca’s most beautiful harbor towns, you can toast to your successful crossing of the Serra de Tramuntana.

Itinerary at a glance

From the fine-sandy beach at Alcúdia, via the Coll des Prat at the foot of the Puig de Massanella and the Cúber reservoir, right through to the mountain village of Estellencs, the full diversity of the Serra de Tramuntana unfolds. In between lie traditional terraced paths, shady forests and varied mountain landscapes.

Get in the right mood for your hiking week in the Tramuntana with a leisurely stroll along the sandy promenade.

A short transfer takes you to Pollença, where you follow the route through a green valley featuring almond and olive trees. Along the historic pilgrimage trail towards Lluc monastery, with first glances onto the impressive Tramuntana mountains. Via a pass you hike past the Puig Tomir, which can also be climbed up as part of an athletic detour. Through holly oak forests with stupendous views back towards the coast to Lluc for an overnight stay in the monastery.

Along historic terraced paths you ascend into the mountains, past old snow houses. Onwards across a nearly alpine-like Mediterranean mountainscape all the way to the pass „Coll des Prat“, the highest point of your holiday, situated at the foot of the mighty Puig de Massanella. After a break with a fantastic view onto the neighbouring island Menorca the path leads you via the spring Font des Prat to the lovely hut Refugi Tossal Verds, situated amidst a picturesque landscape.

The queen‘s stage situated in the heart of the Tramuntana. Fragrant rosemary and juniper bushes accompany your path around the Tossal Verds massif all the way to the Gorg Blau and Cúber reservoirs. At the Pass de L´Ofre you enjoy a grandiose panoramic view onto the lakes and the peaks of the Tramuntana. Along the way to Sóller you follow the terraced path through the impressive gorge of Biniaraix. Fragrant citrus fruit welcome you in Sóller valley, from there via the old tram to Pt. Sóller.

From here the path leads you along the wild romantic West coast. There you are rewarded with countless panoramic views – onto the sea, the jagged cliff coast and the Tramuntana mountains in the background. There is a reason why many famous people have settled here in secluded villas. In the Bay of Deia we highly recommend you sample the local tapas in the tavern situated above the sea before you continue along the bridlepath of Archduke John of Austria to Valldemossa. During this section again the views will enchant you! In Valldemossa you walk in the footsteps of Chopin through the busy alleyways.

Hotel example: Ca's Papà

Via a rocky mountain crest past old coal yards on the postal route 'Cami des Correu' to the little town of Esporles situated inland. Uniquely beautiful is the descent to Banyalbufar featuring endless terraced gardens which were already called 'the Gardens at the Sea' by the Arabs. This pretty village is a great place to linger and leave all your cares behind whilst gazing out onto the glistening sea.

Hotel example: Son Borguny

From the terraced slopes of Banyalbufar, the GR 221 leads through the charming mountain village of Estellencs into the secluded mountain world of the Serra de Tramuntana. Along rocky mountain trails, you’ll ascend to the S’Esclop plateau. You’ll then hike through holm oak forests and across expansive highlands to the Refugi Ses Fontanelles.

Hotel example: Rifugi Ses Fontanelles

Hike over the Coll de sa Gramola from the Refugi to the former Trappist monastery, La Trappa. The unique coastline is a feast for the eyes, and soon your gaze will turn to the spectacular Dragon Island, “La Dragonera.” A picture-perfect scene, it’s no wonder this is one of the most famous hikes in Mallorca. After a refreshing swim in the sea in the charming village of Sant Elm, follow scenic trails to Pt. Andratx.

Sustainably on the go

Our contribution to climate protection

  • Active vacations are among the most environmentally friendly and healthiest ways to travel. Traveling on foot means moving in a climate-conscious way while conserving resources.

  • Our carefully selected accommodations, like us, are committed to lived sustainability. They are deeply rooted in their regions, work with local suppliers, provide attractive employment opportunities for local residents, and thereby strengthen local value creation.

  • With the Eurohike On Tour app, we offer a digital version of our travel documents, allowing you to navigate confidently while on the road. By moving to digital formats, we help conserve valuable natural resources.

  • Eurohike has been certified as a sustainable tour operator with the internationally recognized Travelife certification. To achieve this, more than 261 requirements were carefully met.

  • Even though hiking vacations (and cycling vacations with Eurobike) are among the most climate-friendly forms of travel, they still generate CO₂ emissions. These are carefully measured using the “Carmacal” calculator. Through our commitment to selected climate protection projects, we aim to give something back to the environment.
