The famous Fisherman’s Trail takes you along Portugal’s wild Atlantic coast from Porto Covo to Sagres. From the start, you’ll be captivated by sweeping coastal panoramas and secluded sandy beaches. On scenic trails, you’ll hike past small fishing villages, reddish dunes, fragrant pine forests and rugged cliffs that serve as breeding grounds for numerous bird species. The route follows the most beautiful sections of the Rota Vicentina through pristine bays, expansive heathlands and biodiverse river deltas. Rugged coastal stretches alternate with tranquil natural landscapes and charming towns such as Vila Nova de Milfontes, Odeceixe and Carrapateira. Among the most impressive sights are the Algarve’s majestic rock formations and Cabo de São Vicente, the southwesternmost point of mainland Europe. The journey concludes on a memorable note in the traditional fishing village of Sagres.

Welcome to Porto Covo, a charming coastal town on Portugal’s Atlantic coast. Stroll through the whitewashed alleys, enjoy the relaxed seaside atmosphere and get in the mood for the hiking days ahead.

Today you’ll explore the stunning natural beauty of the Alentejo coast. Passing by small coves sheltered by rocks, you’ll reach the expansive sandy beach of Praia da Malhão. With the Atlantic Ocean always by your side, you’ll be treated to magnificent panoramic views of cliffs, dunes and the sea. The tour concludes with the charming landscape around the mouth of the Rio Mira near Vila Nova de Milfontes, where the river meets the ocean.

After being transported to the trailhead, follow the Rota Vicentina along the beaches of Alteirinhos, Carvalhal, Machados and Amália. On the way to Azenha do Mar, you’ll come across a rustic fishing harbor. From Ponta em Branco, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of Odeceixe Beach and the mouth of the Seixe River where it flows into the sea.

Around the Seixe River delta, you’ll experience the fascinating biodiversity and the scents of numerous aromatic shrubs. Following the old fishermen’s trail, you’ll hike through wetlands and coastal heathlands all the way to Aljezur. A short transfer will then take you to your accommodation.

Above the “Vale Figueiras,” cliffs up to 100 meters high rise steeply from the sea, offering spectacular views at every turn. Popular surfing beaches such as Praia do Canal and the expansive Praia da Bordeira define the coastal landscape. In contrast to the rugged coastal landscape are the gentle, farmland-covered slopes of the hinterland, which accompany you on your way to Carrapateira.

The Barranco da Pena Furada gorge, imposing rock formations, and wide sandy beaches like Praia do Amado offer varied panoramic views along the coast. Your route takes you across the open coastal plateau through the rugged landscape of southwestern Portugal before you finally reach your destination for the day, Vila do Bispo.

From Vila do Bispo, you’ll hike to Cabo de São Vicente, the southwesternmost point of mainland Europe. Along the rugged cliffs and near the famous lighthouse, you can truly soak in the one-of-a-kind atmosphere of this striking place, where land and the Atlantic Ocean meet in a special way. Accompanied at every turn by panoramic views of the sea, you’ll follow the cliffs all the way to the historic fishing village of Sagres.
