Travel story hiking in Piedmont

Flower-decorated paths through a unique landscape

My partner and I are setting off on a hike in a region that’s completely unknown to us—the wine region of Piedmont, the second largest in Italy. Since the journey is a bit longer, we take a short break at Lago di Garda (Lake Garda) to stretch our legs. By early afternoon, we arrive in Alba, leaving us some time to wander through the charming old town. There’s a reason why our first stop is known as the "Truffle Capital." It’s the perfect starting and ending point for our hiking adventure: a journey of scenic trails and fine flavors in Piedmont.

A Culinary Journey of Discovery

Culinary delights take center stage in Piedmont, something we realize the moment we arrive in Alba. As we stroll through the charming streets, we come across countless small restaurants—each more inviting than the last. Unable to resist, we kick off our journey with a glass of Aperol and a small aperitif, officially embracing vacation mode. Dinner quickly reveals the first nuances of the local culinary culture. While portions tend to be smaller, meals unfold over multiple courses, allowing us to savor a variety of flavors. Paired with an exquisite selection of fine wines, every evening becomes a celebration of taste. Another highlight of our vacation is the included wine tasting in the picturesque town of Barolo—an experience not to be missed.

History and Nature in Harmony

Here, we gain a deeper insight into the history and origins of one of the world’s most renowned wines—Barolo, often hailed as the “King of Wines.” After a brief tour through the ancient wine cellars, we begin the tasting, sampling a selection of regional wines that showcase the area’s rich winemaking tradition. Beyond its famous wines, Piedmont is also known for its exceptional hazelnuts, which feature prominently in many local desserts. In Cravanzana, I indulge in a creamy hazelnut gelato, while my partner enjoys a decadent, moist hazelnut cake. To round off our journey, I finally get to savor the long-awaited truffle pasta. The region is particularly known for Tajarin, delicate ribbon-like noodles that perfectly complement the prized truffle flavors. Before heading home, we take advantage of the local shops, picking up a few specialties to bring a taste of Piedmont back with us.

The Picturesque Diversity of Piedmont

On our first day of hiking, we immerse ourselves in the rolling hills of Piedmont. Our route leads from Alba to Treiso, winding through a landscape of sweeping green slopes draped in vineyards and dotted with picturesque villages that harmonize effortlessly with their surroundings. The gently undulating rows of vines create a breathtaking panorama. While Piedmont is renowned for its wines, it is equally famous for its hazelnuts. By the third day, we not only notice the changing landscape beneath our feet but also savor it in the regional delicacies that enrich our journey.

Nature Experiences in Northern Italy

Our routes lead us through picturesque medieval towns, each captivating us with its unique charm and rich history. Every town tells its own story, from ancient castles and churches to narrow, winding alleyways that invite exploration. One of the highlights is Barolo, famed for the prestigious wine that bears its name. As the grand finale of our loop tour, we are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Alps and the imposing Monte Viso. The crisp mountain air and awe-inspiring peaks compel us to pause and fully savor the moment. Having never been to Piedmont before, we set off with no particular expectations. But looking back, I can say with certainty that I’ve fallen in love with this extraordinary region. One thing is clear—this won’t be my last visit.

Authentic Accommodations and Genuine Hospitality

The typical accommodations in Piedmont offer a unique blend of comfort, tradition, and heartfelt hospitality. We are particularly impressed by the Agriturismi, where we experience not only the warmth of the locals but also an authentic taste of the regional cuisine. Both at breakfast and dinner, we savor homemade specialties crafted from the farm’s own produce. Fresh, homegrown ingredients shape every meal, creating a true farm-to-table experience. Our hosts eagerly share their knowledge of agriculture and local traditions, making our stay even more enriching.

The tranquil setting of the Agriturismi provides the perfect retreat after a rewarding day of hiking through Piedmont’s rolling hills. Here, we can unwind, reflect on the day’s experiences, and fully immerse ourselves in the region’s culture and natural beauty. It’s an ideal way to escape the rigours of everyday life and embrace the slower, more enriching cadence of Piedmont.

We highly recommend this route to all food enthusiasts! Piedmont has enchanted us, and we’re returning home with unforgettable memories. This region offers so much more than we ever expected, and we are already looking forward to our next adventure in this captivating landscape. The blend of culinary excellence, warm welcoming Agriturismi, and stunning natural beauty makes Piedmont the perfect destination for both hiking enthusiasts and those in search of tranquility.

My favourite place

My favorite spot on this vacation is just a few kilometers into the hike. After leaving the first hills of the Langa behind, we begin the descent to the Tanaro River. Once we arrive, we cross the river and spontaneously decide to cool our feet in the cold water. The refreshing chill feels amazing!

Although we've only explored a small part of Piedmont so far, we're already completely captivated. We almost lose track of time. Since most of the hike still lies ahead, the break is short, but we fully enjoy it. Refreshed and recharged, we continue on our way. The beauty of the landscape, the gentle hills, and the clear river make this moment unforgettable. Piedmont is showing its best side and promises many more adventures and discoveries on our journey.
