Travel report: The crowning stage from Lake Königssee to Lake Wörthersee

Verena hikes across the Alps

Especially now in the warmer months, a mountain hiking tour past idyllic alpine landscapes, through imposing gorges and along beautiful lake areas offers just the right variety. A hike in the high Alpine regions is the perfect opportunity, especially at this time of year, to switch off and recharge your batteries. Thanks to the pleasant temperatures in the higher regions, it’s the perfect time to enjoy it.

On many of our hiking tours in Austria and Germany you can experience summer freshness in the mountains by foot while discovering nature in the high mountains. Verena didn’t want to miss out on this adventure and decided to embark on the crowning stage of one of our active tours. She tells us what she experienced and what her absolute highlights were on this stage. Here you will find fantastic insights and impressions of one of the most beautiful stages on our hiking tours across Europe: the crowning stage of the mountain hiking tour from Lake Königssee to Lake Wörthersee, 10 days.

Mountain adventures from Bavaria to Carinthia

The mountain hiking tour from Lake Königssee to Lake Wörthersee, 10 days is an absolute highlight for all mountain hiking fans. Here not only summit-baggers can get their money’s worth, but everyone can experience the beauty of nature, numerous mountain ridges with 3,000 metre peaks, lakes, mountain streams and waterfalls from Bavaria to Carinthia in the most wonderful way – by foot. The varied route leads along good mountain and hiking paths and you won’t miss any highlights on your way. The perfect time for this tour is from June to September. The start is in Schönau am Königssee and from there it heads through the Berchtesgaden National Park over the border to Austria and past the impressive waterfalls on the Seisenbergklamm to Weißbach. The next day the route leads on a wonderful high-altitude hike to Dienten am Hochkönig. Continue along the Gasteiner Höhenweg and across deep gorges to the health resort of Bad Gastein.

The crowning stage: crossing the Alps from Bad Gastein to Mallnitz

The crowning stage of this hiking tour is on the fifth day. Verena undertook exactly this wonderful mountain hike including alpine crossing and brought us wonderful impressions. So, let’s go – experience with us (at least in your mind) the crowning stage from Bad Gastein to Mallnitz. The tour starts with perfect weather conditions in the Gastein Valley and leads over an old mule track to the ‘Mallnitzer Tauern’ pass crossing at 2,450 metres. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with an impressive 360 degree view over the numerous 3,000 metre peaks of the Hohe Tauern. The Hagener Hütte, the border point between Salzburg and Carinthia offers the perfect spot to take a short break.

Verena’s highlights of the stage

But before Verena goes back downhill and home, she tells us her absolute highlights of the stage:

  • Natural idyll: “It doesn’t get any greener – that’s what particularly impressed me on this stage. The blooming alpine meadows, rushing mountain streams and many waterfalls – plus the Tauern with numerous 3,000 metre peaks in the background – simply fantastic!”
  • Crossing the Alps without background noise: “On this tour, the noise from everyday life fades away. During the entire route you are far away from the tourist crowds and can listen to the sound of cowbells, grazing sheep and babbling brooks.”
  • Alpine enjoyment like the olden days: “At the Hagener Hütte we were welcomed by the friendly innkeeper and spoiled with culinary treasures from the Alp. The dishes are prepared as they were historically and you can taste that too. From the wonderful Pofesen, potato cheese breads, cheese dumplings, blueberry pie, tasty alpine cheese or fresh milk from the alpine cows, no wish is left ungranted.”

Discover Austria’s southernmost state by foot

After this stage, Verena is heading back home – but we will tell you how this hiking tour from Lake Königssee to Lake Wörthersee, 10 days continues. After all, the route has many other highlights in store. On the sixth day, it heads from Mallnitz through the Seebachtal around the Stappitzer See, through gorges, past refreshing waterfalls and on to the adventurous climbs to the Obervellach in the Mölltal. The following day, the Way of St. James leads up the Wolfsberg, along the Millstätter ridge and the Egelsee nature reserve to Döbriach am Millstätter See – the second largest lake in Carinthia. The very next day you will experience a wonderful panoramic point over the Millstätter See – the star balcony in the middle of the Carinthian Nockberge. Note: If you book the hiking tour from Lake Königssee to Lake Wörthersee, 8 days, you will head home on this day. Your last hiking stage takes you along the shores of Lake Ossiach and over the small Tauern to Velden and the Wörthersee and finally to Villach – the final destination of your hiking holiday, where you can review the wonderful mountain experience of hiking in the Alps.

Our conclusion:

Fantastic hiking and mountain paths, pristine natural areas, idyllic alpine and lake landscapes and an impressive change in scenery from alpine landscapes to high mountains – these are the ingredients that make our mountain hiking tour from Lake Königssee to Lake Wörthersee, 10 days.
