When you set out on long hiking tours and spend your days moving through fresh mountain air, your body needs plenty of energy. That’s where good nutrition truly matters. But staying healthy on vacation can feel challenging, especially when lavish breakfast buffets beckon and multi-course dinners await.

The good news: enjoying delicious hotel cuisine and eating healthy aren’t mutually exclusive. With a few simple tips, you can fuel your body with the right nutrients while savoring every culinary delight along the way.

The perfect way to start your hiking day

Breakfast is the foundation for a great day on the trail, fueling you for the journey ahead. The ideal morning meal combines complex carbohydrates, quality proteins, and healthy fats—think whole grain bread or muesli for lasting energy, yogurt, cottage cheese, or eggs for protein, and nuts, seeds, and kernels to add wholesome fats. To boost your vitamins and minerals, add a handful of fruit to your muesli or enjoy crisp cucumber, tomatoes, and peppers alongside your bread.

Instead of reaching for just sweet pastries or white bread, it’s worth focusing on a balanced mix of macronutrients. This keeps you full for hours, stabilizes your blood sugar, and helps prevent cravings along the way.

The right snacks for your tour

While hiking, your body needs a steady supply of energy—especially on longer routes, packing a few light snacks is a smart move.

Great hiking companions include:

  • Fresh fruit like apples or bananas
  • Nuts and dried fruit
  • Low-sugar granola bars (homemade is best)
  • Whole grain sandwiches

Staying hydrated is just as important. Water and unsweetened teas are the top choices for quenching your thirst. On hot days or challenging tours, your fluid needs rise sharply. A helpful guideline: aim for 30 to 40 milliliters of fluid per kilogram of body weight at rest. When you’re active, plan on topping that off with another 0.5 to 1 liter of water for each hour on the trail.

Homemade granola bars

Store-bought granola bars often hide a surprising amount of sugar and empty calories—but with just a few simple ingredients, you can easily make your own at home. This way, you know exactly what goes into your on-the-go energy sources.

Here’s a foolproof recipe:

  • 200 g oats for complex carbohydrates
  • 100 g honey or dried fruit of your choice for natural sweetness
  • 30 g dark chocolate for valuable antioxidants
  • 30 g olive oil for a boost of omega-3 fatty acids

Preparation:

  1. Mix all ingredients thoroughly.
  2. Lightly oil a baking or granola bar tin, then press the mixture firmly into the tin—make sure it’s even, with no gaps, to keep the bars from crumbling.
  3. Bake in a preheated oven at 170°C for about 15–20 minutes. Let cool completely before removing from the tin. If using a baking dish, simply cut into handy bar-sized pieces once cooled.

Healthy specialties across Europe: our favorites

A hiking vacation is the perfect way to immerse yourself in a region’s culinary highlights. Local inns and mountain huts are always a great option, serving up homemade and seasonal dishes—especially the daily specials, which are freshly prepared every day. This way, you know you’re not ending up with any hidden additives, as can be the case with supermarket food. Whether you crave Alpine delights or Mediterranean flavors, savoring good food is an essential part of the travel experience. With mindful choices, you can enjoy vibrant regional cuisine and a nutrient-rich diet, all at once.

Mallorca: Zucchini-Carpaccio

Thinly sliced, marinated with spices and olive oil, and topped with smoked cheese—a zucchini carpaccio is the perfect choice for anyone craving a healthy Mediterranean appetizer. This delicious version was served at Finca Son Palou in the Orient Valley on Mallorca.

Lake Wolfgang: Abersee sheep’s cheese

Abersee sheep’s cheese is beloved for its rich, full flavor and is crafted right in the region surrounding Lake Wolfgang. It brings the fresh greens from the garden to life, paired with scarlet runner beans, quinoa, marinated red onions, and pumpkin seed oil. You’ll find this delicious salad served at the Lärchenhütte on the Zwölferhorn.

Salzkammergut: Altausseer char

It doesn’t get any fresher than this. Living in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Altaussee, char is one of the region’s most beloved dishes—and it’s wonderfully healthy, too. Served with seasonal grilled vegetables and potatoes, it’s the perfect light summer meal for warm days.

Italy: Caprese

It’s a true classic of Italian cuisine: Caprese—a dish made with sun-ripened tomatoes, mozzarella, and fresh basil. Mozzarella provides high-quality protein as well as calcium and zinc, while juicy tomatoes deliver a boost of vitamin C, and basil is especially rich in vitamin K.

Algarve: Fish plate

Especially in countries with access to the sea, healthy fish dishes are featured on nearly every menu. These meals provide high-quality protein, are easy to digest, and come packed with valuable omega-3 fatty acids. And as for the beloved Pasteis de Nata—they make a perfect little dessert to enjoy every now and then, after a balanced main course.

Italy: Mediterranean grilled vegetables

Eggplant, zucchini, peppers, onions, mushrooms, all tossed with precious olive oil, oregano, and basil—grilled vegetables are a favorite starter across southern Europe. They deliver a rich variety of vitamins and fiber, and capture the vibrant flavors of summer cuisine.

Dinner as your secret to recovery

After an active day on the trail, your body needs nutrients to recover. Many hiking hotels now offer healthy, well-balanced menus tailored to active guests. If you have a choice of several courses, start with a light soup and follow it up with a main dish that covers all the key macronutrients.

Eating light in the evening comes with a real advantage for recovery—a gentle meal is easier on your digestion and helps you enjoy deeper sleep. Heavy, very fatty, or rich dishes can disrupt your rest, keeping your body busy with digestion instead of muscle repair.

A quick tip: raw vegetables in the evening can be hard to digest, so save that big salad for lunchtime. For dinner, slow-cooked meals, stews, or pan-seared fish with vegetables are ideal choices.
