Spring Cleaning for Our Planet

The Eurohike 2025 Trash Cleanup Campaign
Waste collection campaign for a clean environment

Eurohike’s home is right in the heart of the beautiful Salzburg Lake District—where lush meadows, peaceful forests, and four sparkling lakes come together beneath the gaze of majestic mountain peaks. It’s here that our passionate team puts their heart into creating unforgettable active experiences for you, all across Europe.

We feel incredibly lucky to live and work in such a breathtaking natural setting—and that’s exactly why we’re committed to taking care of it. For us, protecting the environment means going that extra mile with a smile. Come along and be part of our Eurohike Trash Cleanup Campaign 2025.

On a Mission to Keep Nature Clean

Right in time for the arrival of spring, our sustainability team brought together a group of enthusiastic Eurohike team members for a special mission: cleaning up the natural surroundings near our main headquarters in Obertrum. As part of the “Clean Obertrum am See” initiative, helping hands from local clubs and community groups joined forces for the good of the environment. For us, one thing was certain—we were proud to take part and contribute to keeping our hometown beautiful.

Blessed with perfect spring weather, we headed out to collect plastic waste, cans, glass bottles, and all kinds of litter from meadows and roadsides. Every item picked up was a small but meaningful step toward a cleaner, greener world. By the end of the afternoon, our trash bags were impressively full, and everything was carefully sorted and properly disposed of. After a job well done, we gathered for a well-deserved break and a little refreshment in the Eurofun garden.

Litter and Hiking Trails Simply Don’t Belong Together

For many active travelers, the best part about hiking is being out in breathtaking nature, surrounded by untouched landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and ecosystems. Even though most of us take it for granted that we don't leave our trash on the side of the trail, you sometimes come across "finds" while hiking that don't belong there. A hiking snack to refuel during the day's leg with a stunning panoramic view is a special treat but there are times when you can't find a trash can nearby, and that's precisely when packaging should go back into your hiking backpack. Or even better: reusable lunchboxes and refillable water bottles are a sustainable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective alternative. Proper waste disposal should be a must for all nature and mountain enthusiasts. We'd be happy if you see it the same way we do!

Sustainability at Eurohike

As a tour operator for active holidays, sustainability is a matter close to our hearts that we actively pursue. The CO2 emissions generated by our original tours are offset through climate protection projects. We gladly reward guests who opt for digital travel documents instead of the printed itinerary with a sustainability bonus.

We are proud to be officially certified by Travelife, the world's leading training and certification program for sustainable tourism. These and many other measures we take for sustainable hiking tours at Eurohike.

Our Environment is Not an Ashtray

Did you know how long it takes for a discarded cigarette butt to completely decompose in nature? The correct answer: Up to 15 years, carelessly thrown cigarette butts pollute our environment. Due to their light weight, they are unfortunately also carried particularly quickly by the wind into bodies of water, meadows, and forests, with a truly fatal side effect. The toxins bound in the tobacco, such as prussic acid, dioxins, and heavy metals, subsequently enter the groundwater and, in the worst case, our valuable drinking water. The toxic mix from a single cigarette is enough to contaminate around 10 to 16 gallons of groundwater.

Especially in the Salzburg Lake District, we want to protect the water quality and thus ensure a clean habitat for people and animals. Around two-thirds of smoked cigarettes end up in nature and are among the most frequently littered items worldwide. With this knowledge in mind, our employees were happy to pick up one or two more cigarette butts.
