Sorry! No FAQs were found. Please try again with a new search term.

Thanks to the mild climate, our hiking adventures are available to book nearly year-round. We particularly recommend the months from April to September, as this window typically offers the most sunshine and the least amount of rainfall.

These diverse islands are the perfect destination for active travelers looking to stay on the move. The islands of São Miguel, Pico, and Faial come especially highly recommended. Faial delights visitors with its idyllic beaches and a lush, vibrant display of hydrangeas. On the island of Pico, you will experience striking volcanic landscapes firsthand. The main island, São Miguel, offers an incredible scenic diversity, ranging from massive volcanic craters and dreamlike lakes to traditional levada trails (irrigation channel paths).

When you embark on a self-guided hiking adventure in the Azores, you can expect far more than just spectacular volcanic landscapes, verdant highlands, towering coastal cliffs, and peaceful bays. You’ll encounter a unique array of flora and fauna—with every step, you'll dive deeper into the local rhythm of island life. Breathe in the crisp Atlantic air and let yourself be charmed by the historic centers of Ponta Delgada on São Miguel and Horta on Faial, or the quaint villages of Pico and São Jorge, filled with inviting cafes, restaurants, and local shops.

After a rewarding day on the trails, the regional cuisine is the perfect way to recharge: enjoy freshly caught fish, seafood, and specialties like Cozido das Furnas or artisanal local cheeses. Paired with a glass of regional wine or an Azorean liqueur, there is simply no better way to end an active day.

The best part of hiking in the Azores? The islands offer a temperate, evergreen climate, lush nature, and consistently spectacular views—making them the ideal destination for anyone looking to combine great hiking with the quiet beauty of these Atlantic gems.

Yes! UNESCO designated the historic center of Angra do Heroísmo as a World Heritage Site in 1983. Additionally, the traditional Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004 for its unique volcanic stonewall vineyards.

Magic World of the Azores

Experience a spectacular hiking getaway on São Miguel, the main island of the Azores. Nearly year-round, you’ll find ideal conditions for an active adventure defined by impressive scenic diversity. Right at the start of your journey, you will explore one of the island's absolute highlights: the massive volcanic crater of Sete Cidades. Two enormous crater lakes—one brilliant blue, the other deep green—are picturesquely nestled within lush nature. Your journey then takes you to the Furnas Valley, where you can experience the power of an active volcano firsthand and visit a traditional tea plantation. From there, you'll head to the island's capital, Ponta Delgada. At Lagoa do Fogo and along the "Rota de Água," unforgettable views and striking nature experiences await. A stroll through the vibrant capital provides the perfect conclusion to your active getaway. And who knows—there may even be time for a whale-watching tour to get up close and personal with these impressive giants of the sea.

Island Hopping Azores

Looking to discover the Azores in all their diversity? We recommend island hopping through these picturesque Atlantic islands. By foot and by boat, you’ll explore four distinct islands: São Miguel, Pico, São Jorge, and Faial. Your journey begins with a flight from the main island to Pico, where you’ll climb the imposing Pico Volcano alongside a local guide. On São Jorge, the island’s highest peak, Pico da Esperança, awaits, along with an impressive trek along the wild northern coast. On Faial, you’ll discover the historic city of Horta with its charming colonial-style architecture. Your exploration concludes on São Miguel, where you’ll hike to some of the Azores' most beautiful natural gems: the crater lakes of Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo, and the Terra Nostra botanical garden. Here, natural thermal pools offer the perfect escape to unwind and relax.

What Our Guests Say

Fabulous experience in incredible places, excellent organization. The itineraries are varied and allow you to see the main characteristic areas of the four islands. I appreciated the alternation between longer and shorter treks, which allowed for free time to explore the places at your own pace.

I traveled to the Azores with a close friend, and both of our expectations were more than exceeded. From start to finish, we were truly looked after by your top-tier service. [...] The luggage transfer was seamless, allowing us to focus entirely on exploring the breathtaking landscapes with just a light daypack.

Kristin V.

Despite some initial hiccups with the booking—partly on our end, as we made some fairly last-minute changes —this was a wonderful, highly recommended tour filled with so many different impressions of the island. The hikes were fantastic and very diverse. All the transfers went smoothly as well!

Culture and Traditions

The islands’ secluded location in the heart of the Atlantic continues to shape Azorean culture to this day. Fishing, livestock farming, agriculture, and traditional handicrafts still define daily life for the locals in many areas. On more rural islands like Pico or Terceira, you’ll encounter impressive, often minimalist structures crafted from dark, local lava rock. In contrast, the typical whitewashed houses with black basalt trim immediately catch the eye in Ponta Delgada like the must-see landmarks Portas da Cidade (City Gates) and the Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião. Local festivities are also deeply rooted in religious traditions. These include Lenten pilgrimages, the celebrations in honor of the "Divino Espírito Santo" (Divine Holy Spirit), and the vibrant Midsummer festivities (St. John’s Night) on Terceira.

Culinary delights in the Azores

While the cuisine across the nine islands shares many similarities, each one boasts its own unique specialties. The common thread: freshly caught fish and seafood form the heart of numerous regional delicacies. The traditional Caldo de Peixe, a simple yet flavorful fish soup, is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. On Terceira, the Alcatra de Terceira—a savory beef stew—is particularly popular, while São Jorge is renowned for its exceptional artisanal cheeses. On São Miguel, you can indulge in the fruity flavors of locally grown pineapple and passion fruit, and on Pico, Graciosa, and Terceira, exquisite local wines await.
