From Lofer to Chiemsee

Thomas looks back on his hiking tour

After the last few weeks when everything has been about Corona, social distancing and #stayhome, I often like to think back to my hiking trip in autumn, when things were still ‘normal’. I’m happy to look back on these carefree days and take you, at least virtually, on my hiking tour in Bavaria.

I went on a three-day hike in the Chiemgau Alps at the end of the season with my mum. Since I already knew the first stage of our trip ‘From Königssee to Chiemsee’, we decided to do a shortened version from Lofer to Chiemsee.

Along the Klemmerichsteig to Bavaria

Full of anticipation for the first day of hiking, the cable car first went to the Loderbichl mountain station. Then we followed the idyllic waterfall path to Loferer Alm, took our first break and enjoy the warm sunshine. The cool water of the waterfalls is an ideal place to refresh yourself and recharge your batteries for the next kilometres of hiking, especially in the summer.

For sure-footed and fit hikers, we recommend continuing the tour over the Klemmerichsteig. Here it goes up and down again and again through a forest and over hill and dale.

At another stop on the Wilklmoosalm we ordered a piece of cake before we took the bus to Reit im Winkl. We immediately felt comfortable there and enjoyed our stay in our accommodation, the Hotel Zum Postillion.

The rich and delicious breakfast buffet is particularly noteworthy here. Those who want to reward themselves with Bavarian specialities in the evening after a hard day’s hiking are in good hands at the Dorfratsch restaurant.

To the Taubensee and the Achental

The next morning the weather gods weren’t on our side. At first there were dense clouds in the sky and soon we felt the first raindrops. However, our good mood could not be stopped and we made the best of the day. We climbed over a forest area and the Stoibermöseralm to the Taubensee. A very nice place where you can enjoy the idyllic landscape and take a dip in the cool water.

We decided to stop in the rustic Taubenseehütte and fortify ourselves with a bratwurst. After lunch we headed steeply uphill along the Kroatsteig and then back down into the Achental to Unterwössen – an idyllic community beautifully nestled between the Bavarian Alps. Todays’s hotel, the Hotel Gabriele, has excellent cuisine and offers dishes made from regional ingredients of the best quality. Ideal to strengthen yourself and end the evening nicely.

Over the Kampenwand to the Chiemsee

Our last day of hiking started with a bus trip to Marquartstein. From here it went to the valley station of the Hochplattenbahn and the cable car up the mountain. We soon reached a beautiful vantage point on Lake Chiemsee and look over the imposing summit of the Kampenwald for the first time. We then hiked along an adventurous forest path to the foot of the Kampenwand and stopped at the cosy Steinlingalm. Here we ended our hiking days with homemade ‘Kaspressecken’ and then took the Kampenwand cable car to the valley. The last few kilometres to Pried took us by train and we reached our destination, Lake Chiemsee.

My conclusion: Despite the moody weather, we really enjoyed this short trip. We were almost alone on the hiking trails and really enjoyed the peace and quiet in the mountains. We were always spoiled with Bavarian culinary delights. In addition, with the Königsee and the Chiemsee you have two fantastic lakes as a start and end point. A firm recommendation!
