Two hikers on the trail through the beautiful Funasfjaellen

The essentials at a glance

Self-guided mountain hiking tour through Sweden's Funäsfjällen region. Explore panoramic peaks, idyllic valleys, and clear mountain lakes on marked trails with longer ascents and descents. Daily hikes range from 7-18 km through birch forests, high plateaus, and open fells. Highlights include Funäsdalsberget summit views, ancient Viking graves along Romboleden trail, Hamrafjället peak, and traditional mountain hotels. Accommodation in B&Bs and mountain hotels with breakfast included, plus spa access in Fjällnäs.

In western Härjedalen, right on the border with Norway, the unique Funäsfjällen mountains await you. Here you can hike across wide, treeless heights, drink fresh spring water straight from clear mountain streams, and enjoy a silence that is rarely interrupted. With a little luck, you may encounter reindeer in the wild – an unforgettable experience. The trails lead to quiet moors, waterfalls, and scenic peaks, past cultural artifacts and living traditions of the Sami people. Along the way, rustic huts invite you to take a break, while regional specialties and impressions of Sami culture enrich the hikes. In the evening, you can relax in atmospheric hotels with good food and soothing tranquility.

Your tour through the Funäsfjällen begins in Funäsdalen, where you ascend through quiet forests to Funäsdalsberget and enjoy wide views toward Helags and Sylarna. Following old paths, the trail continues to Bruksvallarna, passing the River Ljusnan, Viking graves, and the small mountain chapel. From there, you hike across open highlands and mountain lakes to Tänndalen, where the shimmering rock pools of the Livsäterån and the broad plateaus around the Flåten shape the landscape. The ascent of Hamrafjället is another highlight before you reach Fjällnäs via ridge paths and rapids. A final circular trail through birch forests and peaceful fell terrain to Östra Kroktjärn concludes the hike and ties all stages together into a harmonious route through Sweden’s Nordic mountain world.

  • Funäsdalsberget: Wide panoramic views across Härjedalen all the way to the peaks of Helags and Sylarna.
  • Romboleden: Historic long-distance trail with Viking graves, quiet valleys, and the mountain chapel of Bruksvallarna.
  • Livsäterån: Sparkling rock pools, small waterfalls, and crystal-clear streams perfect for resting or refreshing yourself.
  • Hamrafjället: A summit with wide-ranging views, ridge paths, and impressive vistas across Tänndalen.
  • Fjällnäs: A peaceful mountain village on Lake Malmagen, surrounded by open mountain scenery – a beautifully atmospheric ending to the journey.

The hiking paths are well marked and easy to follow, but their longer ascents and descents require a solid basic fitness level. Numerous streams can usually be crossed easily via stones; at higher water levels, short wading sections may occasionally be necessary.

The accommodations are located directly along the stages and offer an ideal starting point for your daily hikes – as well as cozy evenings with regional cuisine and plenty of space to enjoy the peace and vastness of the Nordic mountains to the fullest.

Arrival in Funäsdalen

From the village center, the trail leads through quiet forests up to Funäsdalsberget. Step by step, the forest thins out until you reach the barren heights and enjoy sweeping views over Helags, Sylarna, and Skarvarna. A detour to the Sami Park Lopme Laante offers exciting insights into culture and tradition. You can return to the village either on foot via the ski slope or comfortably by gondola.

On old paths, you ascend west of Funäsdalsberget through peaceful forests before a narrower, stony path opens up on the plateau. Via Flon and the Ljusnan River, the route leads you into history: you follow the Romboleden trail, pass ancient Viking graves, and finally reach the small mountain chapel that watches over Bruksvallarna.

From Bruksvallarna, hike up to Rockvallen and continue through birch forest and wet meadows to the Kariknallen hut at 1.050 meters. After a break with views over the valley, hike along the gentle high plateau to the mountain lake Svalåtjärn. Then continue to Andersborg and from there downhill to the meeting point for the transfer to the hotel.

In no time at all, you will reach the smooth rock slabs and clear streams of Livsäterån, which lies in a sheltered gorge. Here, pools and small waterfalls invite you to take a break or even a dip on warm days. The Flåten plateau offers a wide panoramic view. Those who prefer to relax can enjoy the view from the veranda of the Skarvruets Högfjällshotell.

From Andersborg, you first climb Hamrafjället. The trail leads through sparse birch forest, then steeply up to the summit with impressive views over Tänndalen and Lake Tänndalssjön. Below, a striking rock formation invites you to take a break. Continue over the ridge to the rapids of Anderssjöåfallet before reaching the Fjällnäs Högfjällshotell on Lake Malmagen through sparse forest.

The easy circular walk to Östra Kroktjärn is a great way to round off your tour. You will hike through birch forests to the open fells, where small ponds make the landscape sparkle. Those who prefer a more leisurely pace can enjoy the atmosphere in the traditional hotel spa, where good food and impressive mountain scenery make for a relaxing end to your tour.
