White village houses of Alpujarras nestled among green hills and mountains under blue sky, with a distinctive rocky peak in the background.

The essentials at a glance

Self-guided mountain hiking tour through the Alpujarras region with ascent of Mulhacén (3,479m), Spain's highest peak. The route follows the GR7 trail through white villages, pine and oak forests, spectacular gorges, and high mountain plateaus. Daily hikes range from 9-19 km with significant elevation changes up to 1,340m descent. Good physical condition and mountain hiking experience required. Accommodation in country hotels with breakfast and luggage transfer included.

This hiking tour in the Alpujarras takes you to an unspoiled mountain world in southern Andalusia, where nature, history, and living culture are closely intertwined. Between the southern foothills of the Sierra Nevada, new landscapes open up every day: rugged mountain ranges alternate with fertile valleys, terraced fields, and traditional villages with whitewashed houses. On scenic trails, you will discover traces of the Moorish past, centuries-old irrigation systems, and a pace of life that is deliberately slow. Carefully selected accommodations invite you to linger. The trip is rounded off by the flavors of the regional cuisine – a delightful end to eventful days of hiking in one of Spain's most fascinating regions.

Arrival in Trevélez

After a short transfer, you will arrive in the village of Lobrás. From here, follow the GR7 through a quiet, little-traveled part of the Alpujarras. The trail climbs steadily across plateaus to Timar and Juviles. Along the way, you can enjoy views of the gorge, the mountains of the Sierra Nevada, and the white villages of the region. After the ascent, the trail descends through wooded terrain to Trevélez.

You leave the village on the GR7. A gentle climb through pine forests and open meadows soon brings you to a high mountain plateau with magnificent views over the Alpujarras. You cross a quiet oak forest and finally reach Busquístar. From there, you continue downhill to Ferreirola and Fondales and, after a final short climb, reach your hotel, where you can enjoy a well-deserved rest.

An old path leads down into a spectacular gorge, which you cross via a historic bridge. On the opposite side, the stony path climbs and opens up a view of the scattered villages. A wider path takes you to an old farmhouse before a narrow path leads down to the gorge again. You hike back through green landscapes to the hotel in Mecina.

A shorter but still challenging hike with a long climb to the village of Capileira. You will have impressive views over the Taha Valley and hike through oak forests to the village of Bubion. Steep meadows now dominate the landscape until you reach the idyllic village of Capileira.

First, the trail leads down to the Río Poqueira. Then it climbs back up through terraced mountain slopes covered with olive trees, high above the river. Next, it descends towards Pampaneira, where you will have time to stroll around the village. Finally, you return to Capileira via historic connecting paths.

A transfer (not included) will take you to Alto del Chorrillo at an altitude of 2,712 meters. From there, the technically easy but challenging ascent to the summit of Mulhacén, Spain's highest mountain, begins. The return route follows the same route across the wide terrain of the Poqueira Gorge. In case of bad weather conditions, you can alternatively hike through the Poqueira Gorge and admire the summit of Mulhacén from high pastures.
