Wine hike through Provence

The villages of the Côtes du Rhône

8 Days / 7 Nights
Walking

This hiking tour takes you through the heart of Provence – a region where culture and nature intertwine in a special way. In the vineyards of Châteauneuf du Pape, you will experience historic sites and world-famous wines. Varied hikes lead through vineyards, past castle ruins and into idyllic villages that are among the most beautiful in France. You will be accompanied by fascinating views of the Rhône valley, the rugged cliffs of the Dentelles de Montmirail, and the white summit of Mont Ventoux. Enjoyable wine tastings, quiet chapels, and Roman excavations enrich these trails. A journey full of discoveries that brings you closer to Provence with all your senses.

Itinerary at a glance

Culinary delights await you among the vineyards of Châteauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, and Beaumes-de-Venise. Fresh baguettes, goat cheese, and ratatouille can be found at the colorful market in Vaison-la-Romaine, which offers outstanding regional cuisine.

Individual arrival in Avignon, where medieval streets, the famous Saint-Bénézet bridge, and the imposing papal palace will impress you. A transfer will take you to the wine-growing village of Châteauneuf du Pape, famous for its vineyards and the view from the castle ruins over the Rhône valley.

You will start with a hike through the vineyards of Châteauneuf du Pape, where the traditional wineries of Vaudieu, Nalys, and Solitude invite you to enjoy tastings. In the afternoon, discover the picturesque village between wine shops and castle ruins, or deepen your enjoyment with a half-day wine tour (optionally bookable), which will teach you about wine production from the vine to the bottle.

In the morning, your route takes you through the vineyards once again, past red boulders from the Ice Age that warm the vines and produce wines full of character. The way back to Châteauneuf du Pape takes you to the famous Château Mont Redon. In the afternoon, there is time to relax or enjoy another wine tour before a transfer takes you to Séguret, one of the most beautiful villages in France.

From Séguret, quiet country roads with sweeping views over the Rhône Valley take you to Gigondas, famous for its powerful red wines. An ascent brings you directly to the bizarre peaks of the Dentelles de Montmirail, where impressive rock formations awaken your sense of adventure. After this scenic highlight, the route descends to the atmospheric village of Vacqueyras, whose wines are among the most renowned in the region.

At the foot of Mont Ventoux, follow secluded paths and wild slopes to the mysterious ruins of a church with ancient cave dwellings. The trail then descends to Beaumes-de-Venise, where sweet Muscat wine beckons. Finally, you reach your overnight destination of Le Barroux, an idyllic mountain village with winding streets and an imposing 12th-century castle.

Against the impressive backdrop of Mont Ventoux, you will hike through cool pine and cedar forests to the chapel of Piaut, once a destination for local pilgrims in times of drought. You will follow the old pilgrimage trail to Malaucène. Afterwards, you can round off the day with a visit to the spa (not included) with its warm springs, saunas, and outdoor jacuzzi.

Hike over wooded hills scented with thyme and rosemary to Le Crestet, a small, authentic mountain village. You will then reach Vaison-la-Romaine, known for one of the largest archaeological sites in France. Roman villas, mosaics, and the ancient theater provide insights into everyday life 2,000 years ago and make the town an exciting end to your hiking trip.
