Spectacular coastal experiences along the Algarve

Spring awakening on a hiking holiday in Portugal

To escape the cold Austrian winter, my partner and I are once again heading south this year—to Portugal’s stunning Algarve. From the plane, we already admire the coastline from above, and we can hardly wait to explore this natural beauty on foot. Upon arrival, the sea air greets us—still a little brisk, but already pleasantly mild. Instantly, I know I’ve made the right choice in picking this destination.

From Lagos in the west to Tavira in the east, we hike along scenic trails and forest paths, through charming villages, and for miles right along the sandy shoreline. This year’s vacation is all about summer, sun, and sea—or in our case: winter, sun, and sea. Everything is in bloom, and the mix of colorful flowers and exotic plants creates a breathtaking scene. From the very first day to the last, we’re captivated again and again by dramatic cliffs, massive rock formations rising from the ocean, and gorgeous beaches—still completely empty in March.

First Stage: The Wild West Coast

After a proper royal breakfast, we set off promptly at nine o’clock with the transfer to our first day of walking. Full of energy, we begin right by the sea on the famous Fishermen’s Trail. The path leads us over dramatic cliffs and rocky headlands, far from the crowds, always with the steady company of the Algarve’s characteristic wind. The black, red, and golden rocks stand out strikingly, while to our right the Atlantic roars in towering waves. Along the way, we reach plateaus with spectacular views—perfect for a quick photo stop.

By midday, the gray clouds that have been following us since late morning finally catch up. Luckily, just then we reach the beachside restaurant “Zavial”—a cozy refuge with sweeping views of the sea. After a much-needed meal, we slip into our rain jackets and continue on. Only a few more kilometers separate us from our destination for the day: the small village of Figueira. Tip: Walking poles are highly recommended, as the final stretch requires surefootedness. Especially in wet conditions, the trail can become quite slippery.

Ponta da Piedade Loop Trail

In the coastal village of Burgau, a breathtaking walk along the rugged coastline unfolds, with the wild Atlantic as your constant companion. Towering cliffs, jagged rocks, and hidden coves tell the story of the ocean’s relentless power. The trail winds over picturesque wooden boardwalks, which at various points offer viewing platforms with spectacular vistas of the untamed sea.
The relentless roar of the waves and the sharp, salty tang of the ocean follow us along the entire trail, guiding us toward the lighthouse, perched dramatically atop the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade. Hidden coves and pristine, empty beaches beckon us to pause, breathe deeply, and soak in the untamed beauty around us. A steep staircase winds down to a striking rock formation, where the Atlantic surges and smashes against the cliffs with unstoppable power. Despite a few brief showers and slippery sections, the stage remains safe and enjoyable with the right gear, allowing us to savor every moment of the hike until the very end.

Adventurous Walk through the Seven Hanging Valleys

After a short transfer with our friendly local guide Richi, we set off on another day of walking, poles in hand. The trail climbs steeply up and down past impressive rock formations and sparkling coves. A tip: keep an eye on the ground—millions-of-years-old shells are hidden along the way.

Today’s stage destination, Albufeira, sees relatively few tourists at this time of year but is one of the Algarve’s most popular vacation spots in peak season—and for good reason. The town is charming, full of character, and perfectly designed for exploration. After this rewarding and adventurous section, we are treated to a stunning sunset over Albufeira’s old town. A perfect day comes to a close.

Barefoot along the Sandy Beach with a Scenic Boat Ride

Today’s route takes us along gentle paths and wooden boardwalks past sparkling salt pans, teeming with a variety of bird species. What makes this stage truly unforgettable? Definitely the fine sandy beach that awaits us on Tavira Island. Without a second thought, we kick off our shoes for a barefoot walk—letting the warm, sun-baked sand sink between our toes.

Along the way, we cross entire “shell fields,” some dotted with impressively large shells. Later, a snack break with a sweeping view of the sea turns the hike into an even more memorable experience, quickly becoming one of my personal highlights. The day concludes with a short, scenic boat ride to charming Tavira—the “Venice of the Algarve.”

Restaurant Recommendation: In the evening, we enjoy dinner at Natsu Tavira, a warm and inviting restaurant with authentic Japanese décor. The ramen is simply delicious—a definite must-try in Tavira.

Tips for Walking along the Algarve

On nearly every stage, you’ll be exposed to the sun for most of the day. For this reason, it’s wise to protect yourself with sunscreen and a hat. Always carry plenty of water and some snacks, as there are often long stretches without any places to stop.

For the more demanding sections, sturdy ankle-high hiking boots and rain- and windproof clothing are essential. Hiking poles can also be helpful. On hot days, don’t forget your swimwear so you can take a refreshing dip in the turquoise waters.

Spring Awakening

In spring, the Algarve bursts into a vibrant sea of flowers, creating a breathtaking contrast with the deep blue ocean and golden cliffs. Along the coastal paths, colorful blooms appear at every turn, painting the landscape in vivid hues. The mild climate and refreshing sea breeze awaken a true sense of springtime joy as we walk along the dramatic cliffs. Nature seems to come alive all around us, and the sweet scent of flowers lingers in the air.

A walk along the Algarve coast is an unforgettable experience for all the senses—spring here is an invitation to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and let it captivate you.

My Conclusion

Back home, we reflect with joy on an unforgettable escape along the picturesque Algarve coast. The routes and overnight stays in the charming stage destinations will remain treasured memories for years to come. We were captivated not only by the breathtaking coastal landscapes and trails that look straight out of a picture book, but also by the warm hospitality we experienced along the way.

While the first three stages are certainly more demanding, the later sections invite relaxed, leisurely walking. We especially recommend this tour during the winter months—a perfect way to escape the cold of Central Europe and bask in the sun and fresh sea air of Portugal’s mild climate.

My favourite spot

After just a few kilometers, we had already passed countless beautiful beaches. Yet the cove with a breathtaking view of Praia do Mato, on the stage from Lagos to Albufeira, truly stole our hearts. The vista from the cliff down to the crashing waves, paired with the small cave nestled picturesquely in the rocks, is simply spectacular. Beyond that, the expansive, uninterrupted view of the trails we’d already traversed along the stunning coastline adds to the magic. A bright blue sky and warm sunshine complete the scene—truly a little slice of paradise.

  • My Recommendation: Bring a seat cushion, pack a small picnic, and simply enjoy the breathtaking surroundings.
