Cacti on the Canary Island of Lanzarote with windmill in the background

A whopping 300 volcanic cones were created by the massive eruptions on Lanzarote and coined the fitting name ‘Fire Island’ for the country situated in the middle of the sea. In addition to volcanic rock, the name César Manrique is particularly present on the island. The landscape artist has decisively shaped the volcanic island with his paintings and sculptures. It is therefore almost inevitable to encounter works of art by the famous painter. Lanzarote: Simple landscape paired with Canarian architecture and black mountains as a contrast.

The absolute highlight, however, is the biosphere reserve. Although it has existed since 1993, it is still an absolute insider tip. Many rarely used hiking paths in the barren landscape allow hikers to see the island from a different perspective. A true treat for the eyes, the island of Lanzarote!

The volcanic island off the coast of West Africa is not only home to breathtaking scenery, but also excellent wine. Especially in the area of La Geria you can enjoy fine wines. What makes viticulture on Lanzarote special? The vineyards are laid out in a semicircle and protected from the wind by lava stones. In addition, the lapilli layers store water perfectly. Thus, there are optimal conditions for viticulture on the volcanic island.

  • The Tanit Museum: In San Bartolomé you not only reach the geographical centre of the island, the ‘Monumento al Compesino’. The Museum of Ethnology houses many cultural treasures and is worth a visit.
  • Village of Nazareth: On day 3 you will continue into the goat cheese area to the white-washed village of Nazareth. Our culinary tip: Try the goat cheese with Parma ham and figs! This is a treat for both the palate and the eyes.

The volcanic island in the Atlantic reveals a never-before-seen landscape to hikers. Black mountains, red sand and steep cliff coasts make the journey a true natural spectacle. With the daily hikes you are on your feet for about two to two and a half hours. Due to the many vineyards, there are numerous opportunities to enjoy breaks sampling delicious wines.

Itinerary at a glance

Day
01
Arrival at Yaiza

You hike to the traditional village of Uga, where Arabian camels are still bred to this day, after that you proceed into the very lauded wine-growing region of the island, where the countless craters on the ‚Picón‘ (volcanic ash fields up to a size of 2.5 m) enable a very special way of viticulture. Volcanic rocks arranged in a semi-circle protect the vines from the wind and the layers of lapilli accumulate water perfectly. Should the opportunity arise, we highly recommend you do not miss out on sampling local wines.

Visit to the Tanit Museum in San Bartolomé, before you reach the geographic middle of the island at the ‚Monumento al Campesino‘. Onwards through the windy ‚goats cheese area‘into the white-washed little village of Nazaret. This village became famous once the actor Omar Sharif purchased a chic villa here. Today it is an open-air museum (LagOmar) with a restaurant attached.

En route is the open-air museum Teguise, up until 1852 the capital of the island. Please take time for a wander around the alleyways leading between the noble houses and palaces. With a view onto the ‚Castillo Sta. Barbara‘ you ascend to the pilgrimage chapel ‚Las Nieves‘, from where you enjoy a sublime view onto the Bay of Famara, a popular surfer‘s spot. After that you reach Haría, the so-called ‚Valley of 1000 palm trees‘ and final residence of Manriques.

Descent to the coast through the oasis-like ‚Valle de Temisa‘, also called the ‚Valley of 1000 Flowers‘. The hiking path starts off slightly steeper and meanders slowly between cultured terraces of the Barrancos downhill all the way to the sea, where the sandy beaches of Arrieta invite you to a proper swim in the Atlantic. Then enjoy fresh fish prepared in one of the excellent restaurants with seaview before taking the bus back to Haría.

In the little village of Máguez, situated amidst a fertile valley with almond and fig trees, is the start of an ancient path connecting villages to Yé, which means ‚the end of the world‘ in ancient Canarian. Here you have the option to climb up the volcano ‚Monte Corona‘ (609 m). After that you descend to the Northern coastline to the ferry port of Orzola, a lovely town impressing with its blue- and white-washed houses and its plain but especially great fish restaurants.

Today you have a choice: either embark on a trip to the picture-perfect island La Graciosa (‚the Graceful‘) with a 20-minute crossing directly from Orzola, or visit the mystic magic worlds of César Manrique. On ‚La Graciosa‘ a circular hiking tour awaits with views onto the now uninhabited rocky islands of Alegranza and Montaña Clara. Alternatively, you can visit caves embellished by Manrique, and Punta de Mujeres, a charming holiday resort inviting you for a swim.
