Family hike with Lake Wolfgang and mountain panorama in the background

You will experience traditional charms during this alpine pasture hike with your family. The trip takes you to the mountains of the Salzkammergut, with its magnificent views of the Wolfgangsee, the Totes Gebirge, the Dachstein glacier and the Hohe Tauern. In between, you can stop for a rest in a rustic alpine hut and have a chat with the friendly hosts.

Foodie tip: Try the traditional pastry ‘Pofesen’.

Over eight days you and your family will wander over blooming meadows, through deep ditches and reach the lofty heights of the Salzkammergut. On the alpine hike the kids will discover cows, sheep and horses around every corner. In the wildlife enclosure Kleefeld they can see animal science at its finest. They will become experts in telling apart the different species of deer in Austria!

On day three, the Zwölferhorn cable car leads you into the Osterhorn area. Once at the top, the panoramic paths lead past raging waterfalls and to idyllic mountain huts with delicious delicacies to snack on.

Fun and games with the Salzkammergut Card: The card offers you and the kids a wealth of attractions. Whether it’s a trip on the quaint Schafbergbahn, a visit to the amusement park in Abarena or a ride on the summer toboggan run – there is something for everyone!

This lively eight-day hike through the unique Salzkammergut and its mountains is an absolutely perfect family holiday. The tour is quite challenging and requires good fitness. Children over the age of eight should be able to cope with the several-hour sections. The tours lead along alpine pastures, forest and good hiking trails and offer some beautiful views of the mountains and the turquoise-green Wolfgangsee.

Are you already convinced and can’t wait to put your feet up in an alpine hut in the Salzkammergut? Perfect! Then book now!

Itinerary at a glance

Farms on every corner, pure nature and the wild animal enclosure Kleefeld: hiking in the Salzkammergut is animal fun! After swimming in Lake Wolfgang and a ride on the summer toboggan run, Kasnockn (cheese noodles) and Pofesen (bread rolls) await you for refreshment.

You will set off from Lake Wolfgangsee’s shore and then you will head up to your first Alm and wildlife zone Kleefeld. Here you can expect to see numerous wild animals like roes, deer or ibexes. You will also find a play area here if you are still feeling energetic. You will then walk to the Schartenalm, which is located in an idyllic situation between steep, towering mountain tops. On your way back, you will go past a snack area that serves wild game that they breed themselves and that has a wonderful view over St. Wolfgang.

Today your route leads to the alpine pastures in the Osterhorn area. From the Mozart village of St. Gilgen you will float by cable car to the Zwölferhorn, from where you will enjoy a fantastic view of Lake Wolfgang and the glacier regions. Along a panoramic path your way leads past a rushing waterfall and through forests to the Genneralm. There you will spend two days in a cozy alpine pasture surrounded by lush pastures and crowned by numerous peaks.

Hotel example: Posch´n Hütte

Today you have lots of possibilities: either you can have a chilled-out day at the Alm enjoying Alm life with the cows and seeing the cheese production. Or, you go on a walk to one of the other Alms around. Those brave ones might even climb up to a view point. In the evening you will have a pan of “Kasnockn” (a traditional cheesy dish) for dinner made from cheese made at the Alm.

Today’s walk will take you through an idyllic high valley with numerous small alms amidst the mountain sides. Grazing herds of cows line your way, which winds along the numerous ravines towards the expansive area around the Postalm. Here at the Postalm, you will enjoy two further nights at another traditional alm.

Hotel example: Huberhütte

If you feel like it, you can either take an easy walk on the alm path with flowers all around or you can go on a more adventurous walk and go up one of the small or larger peaks. There are enough possibilities for today! You should make sure that you visit the dairy maid at the Labenberghütte in order to see the cheese being made. A hearty stop obviously belongs to today. The Postalm chapel was built under the orders of Empress Sissi and is very worth seeing.

At the end of the week, you can either go on another lovely walk down to Lake Wolfgang where you will be staying tonight or alternatively maybe you prefer to take the bus down and go to one of the attractions that your Salzkammergut Card will give you discounts or deals towards. Here you are spoilt for choice: you could take the boat across the lake, take the cog railway up the Schafberg, visit the great children’s play park “Abarena”, have fun in the “Dorf der Tiere” (animal village) or take a ride on a summer toboggan.
