Autumnal reflection at the Grundlsee

Imposing mountain scenery, impressive alpine landscapes and crystal-clear lakes – the Ausseerland is pure perfection. In addition, you can experience extraordinary customs, costume, music and dance. A special jewel is the Tauplitzalm. Lovingly called ‘The Alm’ by the locals, it is the largest lake plateau in Central Europe and lies in the mountain range of Totes Gebirge.

Passionate hikers, who appreciate lonely paths and varied nature, definitely get their money’s worth during this trip! You can let your eyes gaze into the distance and enjoy the beauty and silence of the landscape. On this seven-day tour you will have many fascinating experiences. For example, during the leg from the imposing Loser over the Tressensattel you will follow a rushing mountain stream. Or during the subsequent rowing experience with a traditional ‘Traunerl’ across the lake. In the heart of the Ausseerland you will get up close to nature!

  • Tauplitzalm: At approx. 5 km², this high plateau is the largest lake plateau in the northern Limestone Alps. Enjoy rugged karst landscapes with countless rare alpine plants and animals.
  • Lake paradise of Ausseerland: One cool body of water follows the last. Be sure to visit the Toplitzsee, it’s a real treasure!
  • Species-rich flora and fauna: Flower lovers get ready! A trip to the Totes Gebirge is worthwhile. The area is well known for its species-rich flowers.

You make your own way to Bad Goisern at Lake Hallstatt. From there you continue straight to the hiking paradise of Predigstuhl, from where you can climb the alpine pastures, huts and peaks of the Ausseerland. The hiking tour is not technically challenging, but you will need sure-footedness in some parts, as well as good basic fitness. On average, the day tours are 17 kilometres long and last around five hours.

Note: This hike is also suitable for your four-legged friend!

Itinerary at a glance

In the Salzkammergut, countless mountains, such as the Predigstuhl, await your ascent. Row in a Traunerl (long row boat) across the Toplitzsee and stroll through Altaussee. With a bit of luck, you'll spot gentians and chamois goats in the Tote Gebirge mountains.

Short taxi transfer from Bad Goisern to the hiking paradise Predigstuhl. You walk past rustic cabins, alpine pastures and impressive summits into the heart of the Ausseerland. The alpine pasture Hütteneckalm with stunning views on UNESCO heritage region ‘Hallstatt Dachstein’ is only one place to invite you for a break, together with the unique Blaa-alp. You will then walk to the wonderful village Altaussee where you be staying overnight. Numerous artists spend their summer here and enjoy the charming landscape with its limestone rocks, wide forests and flower fields.

You will start your day’s walk by going along the length of lake Altaussee with a view of the imposing Loser mountain. You will then head to the next lake of the day by crossing the Tressen saddle – of course you will have endless mountainous panoramic views on your way. You will then reach Gößl by lake Grundlsee by walking along a path with great views all round. Don’t miss out on visiting the mystical lake Toplitzsee, where there is thought to be treasure hidden. Or go for a row with a traditional wooden boat.

The route takes you along a fast-flowing mountain stream and through extensive alluvial areas out of the valley to Ödernalm, which is the nicest spot on the planet according to Heinrich Harrer. After one last ascent over the Törl you will arrive at the charming, almost magical lake. Soon afterwards you will arrive at the Tauplitzalm, which is located on a high plateau.

The Tauplitzalm is one of Europe’s loveliest high plateaus and has a lot of opportunities for walking. The 6 lakes walk takes you on a route with great views and to wonderfully located mountain lakes.  A walk to one of the many peaks in the Tote Gebirge mountain range is a very special experience. The area is well-known for its large variety of fauna and flora ranging from the snow roses to gentian to alpine rose flowers. Maybe you will also spot some chamoises, which are native to the steep mountain slopes.
