Alpine Panorama Trail

From Appenzell to Einsiedeln.

Hilly terrain and cow grazed pastures in front of alpine mountain ranges - a region characterised by tradition, customs and originality. In Eastern Switzerland, the clocks sometimes still stand still, while the people cultivate the treasures of their homeland in a special way. There is much more to it than yodelling and cheese. See for yourself on a journey through Appenzell and Toggenburg.

Details of the 7-day hiking tour

"Grüezi mitanand!" - is how Switzerland welcomes you for the next seven days. From Appenzell, the first stage takes you via Gontenbad and Jakobsbad to Urnäsch. From there it continues to Schwägalp, from where a footbridge leads into an extraordinary landscape. In general, the pre-Alpine area is a varied one. full of meadows and forests, streams and waterfalls. A cable car takes you up to the Säntis, from whose summit you can see six countries in good weather.

On the way to the Risipass you share the hiking trails with numerous cows, the route leads from alp to alp. The hike from Stein to Amden is a long tour, but peppered with magnificent views of the Glarus Alps, among others. Once you arrive in Amden, you can enjoy magnificent views of Lake Walen. The last stage is a real challenge. At Stöcklichrüz, you should let your gaze wander once more before heading over the Sihlsee to Einsiedeln.

Highlights of the hike through eastern Switzerland

  • The canton of Appenzell is marked by an interesting historical break. In the course of the Reformation, the region was divided into the Reformed Appenzell Ausserrhoden and the Catholic Appenzell Innerrhoden.
  • The customs practised in Eastern Switzerland are very diverse. If you want to gain an insight, you should visit the Appenzeller Brauchtumsmuseum in Urnäsch. A special feature of the region are the New Year's Eve hermits who parade through the streets with elaborately decorated masks and hats, offering good wishes for the New Year.
  • Regional delicacies: Swiss cuisine is characterised by tradition and regionality. For a great insight, visit the Alpine show dairy on the Schwägalp, for example, where you can see how aromatic cheeses are made.
  • Incidentally, the Way of St. James also runs along the last few metres of the tour. The town of Einsiedeln is therefore a popular destination for pilgrims from all over the world. In addition to the beautiful old town, the monastery, which is over 1,000 years old, is especially worth a closer look.
