Mountain Hiking
Woman walker sitting on a large stone on the shore of a windswept loch of Rannoch Moor

Scotland's most popular long-distance hiking trail starts just north of Glasgow and leads 154 kilometres through a magical landscape that could have come straight out of a film set. However, this is not at all improbable; Braveheart with Mel Gibson, for example, was filmed in this area. Barren mountains, mystical moors and deep black lakes will delight you just as much as the solitary tranquillity, historic sites and charming small towns.

From Milngavie, the first attraction of the tour is the Glengoyne whisky distillery. On a guided tour followed by a tasting, you will learn a lot about the country's typical speciality. Stop off in Drymen in one of the rustic pubs - do you dare to try a portion of the Scottish national dish haggis? With the stage to Loch Lomond, the area becomes increasingly lonely and the hikes even more pristine.

On day 4 you walk in the footsteps of the bandit Rob Roy, Scotland's Robin Hood. The natural scenery at Rannoch Moor, Loch Tulla and the "Devil's Staircase" will amaze you. You will hardly be able to miss the attraction of the last stage to Fort Williams: Ben Nevis - the highest mountain in Great Britain.

  • Loch Lomond: The largest, most beautiful and most romantic lake in Great Britain? Absolutely! Weather permitting, you can not only enjoy the view of the loch, but even take a plunge into the cool water.
  • The imposing Ben Nevis: 1,345 metres high and around 400 million years old - this mountain exudes that certain something. 'The Ben’ is particularly popular with hikers and mountaineers, but due to the unstable weather conditions, among other things, you should pay it the respect it deserves.
  • Fort William is considered the "outdoor capital of Scotland". Adventurers get their money's worth here. How about quad biking, white water rafting, caving or animal safaris?
  • The unspoilt nature in this corner of Scotland is particularly beautiful, but also wild, barren and rugged. Although the West Highland Way attracts visitors from all over the world, in many places you are on your own. Perfect for leaving everyday life behind for a few days and sending your soul on a particularly relaxing journey!

Although the route is mostly flat and climbs are the exception, the daily stages are up to 24 kilometres long. The weather here is also unpredictable, quickly changing from sunny to windy and wet. You can relax in cosy accommodation, where you will be served typical local breakfasts.

Itinerary at a glance

With Loch Lomond, the largest lake awaits you, and Ben Nevis is considered the highest mountain in Great Britain. The Trossachs National Park is particularly idyllic, while in Fort William you can look back on your week of hiking.

Arrival in Milngavie

Through the old county of Lennox you walk across a rural area into the small town of Drymen. A must is to stop and taste one (or more) of the outstanding whiskeys at Glengoyne Distillery.

Todays section offers a nice change in scenery alternating between Lowlands and Highlands. This is most apparent from ‚Conic Hill’, the ascent is indeed strenuous, however the stunning views onto Loch Lomond and others treats will more than make up for it.

The majority of this day is spent walking along the east banks of Loch Lomond. A beautiful trail along roaring wild streams, green forests, a hill moor and an abundance of animals awaits. Enjoy this day in Trossachs National Park with all of your five senses.

Short transfer to Bridge of Orchy. Along an old military path, you walk past countless, deep black lakes. The aim of today is Kingshouse – a former trading station in the middle of Scottish Highlands. On the way you even pass a small ski-resort.

Follow an old army road from Kingshouse to Altnafeadh while enjoying a marvellous view on to the well-known ‚Weeping Glens’. Via the ‚Devils Staircase’, a col which is also the highest point (550 m) of the West Highland Way, onwards with breathtaking views of Ben Navis, Scotland’s highest mountain, into the pretty little town Kinlochleven.

Fantastic views along your trail, through a quiet valley with pine forests and moors onwards into the direction of Fort William. Approximately half way there you reach a col which takes you to Glen Nevis. At the opposite side of this valley towers Ben Nevis. Walk past Ben Nevis Visitor Center from where the ‚Glen Nevis street’ steers you towards your final destination Fort William.
