Walking
Poppy field with view of the lighthouse

Modern Hanseatic cities on the mainland and the idyllic Baltic Sea beaches, thatched houses, pier, lighthouses and promenades on the islands. The Baltic Sea, also known as the Pearl of the North, is truly a dream. Dunes, sandbars, beach chairs – and not a soul for miles to see. Switch off, forget about everyday worries and hike around Rügen, that’s the plan.

Every path and every corner will surprise you anew and convince you of the charm of the north. Rügen is a true paradise for hikers and those who want to become one. More details about hiking in Northern Europe.

They are not talkative, the Northern Lights – at least that is the widespread belief about the people on the North and Baltic Seas. In the ‘cool north’, nature and the sea speak for themselves. Idyllic panoramas and sweeping views dominate the landscape here. From Stralsund you go first to Hiddensee and from here on to the Wittow peninsula, the northernmost part of Rügen. Other stops on your route are Cape Arkona, Sassnitz, Binz and Göhren.

  • Jasmund National Park: Unforgettable, spectacular and definitely worth a stopover. Here are the so-called chalk cliffs. Bordered by beech forests and surrounded by sparse bogs and springs, the coast is a real feast for the eyes. There’s a reason why UNESCO made the old beech forest, including the chalk cliffs a World Heritage Site.
  • The steam train ‘Rasender Roland’: A steam locomotive-operated experience of driving through the landscape on rattling rails should not be missed.

Island hopping on Rugia. The constant companion of this tour is the Baltic Sea, with its sandbars and unique picturesque beauty. For eight days you hike on mostly flat to slightly hilly terrain and can discover the north-east of Germany on small side streets and sanded forest paths. On average, you are on your feed give hours a day, always accompanied by a refreshing breeze.

Itinerary at a glance

Rügen is truly a dream destination! The chalk cliffs in Jasmund National Park are enchanting, as is Cape Arkona. Take a leisurely stroll through Stralsund and Binz, and be sure not to miss a ride on the "Rasender Roland" steam train on the Rügen narrow-gauge railway!

From the promenade in Stralsund you can see the island of Rugia on the other side of the Stralsund.

In the morning the ferry takes you over to Hiddensee Island. On foot you explore this little car-free island. The route leads across heath area from Neuendorf via Vitte to Kloster. In the afternoon you continue by boat along a placid route to Wittow peninsula.

You walk along the cliff coast to the northern cape of the island. Parts of the route lead you charmingly along the beach or the tread. From the ‚Jaromarsburg’, a preserved earth rampart, you get a view far across the Baltic Sea.

In the morning you can either walk along the Bodden or along the Schaabe-beach to Glowe. Cafés and restaurants invite you to a break. Short transfer from Glowe to Königstuhls. From there the route continues via the charming cretaceous coast through Jasmund national park to Sassnitz.

After breakfast a Bäder-boat takes you to Binz. In Binz a busy promenade invites for a stroll. From the tower of the hunting château Granitz you are rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view onto the coast and the sea.

You walk along the tread all the way to the beach in Baabe and through the Baabe-heath to Göhren. The route into the South of Mönchsgut peninsula can lead as far as your feet can carry you. Return journey by the ‚Rasende Roland’-train from Göhren to Binz or Sellin.

One more time across the ‚Granitz’, then you continue along the Greifswald Bodden to Putbus. This route can be cut short by taking the so-called train ‚Rasender Roland’. Charming walking paths lead you in large parts directly along the Bodden-shores. You take the train from Putbus back to Stralsund.
