Hikers amidst the vineyards on the Rhine

Recharge your batteries, experience new impressions and just enjoy life - all of this is part of a successful holiday. All this and much more awaits you on a hiking tour with Eurohike on the Rheinsteig. Everything is right here: the breathtaking nature, the culturally splendid architecture and the excellent cuisine. In addition, hiking becomes a bit of luxury here, because the Rheinsteig is a premium hiking trail and has already been voted the most beautiful hiking trail in Germany.

The short hiking holiday starts in charming Rüdesheim. Before you start, you should pay a visit to the famous Drosselgasse. It is known as the “happiest alley in the world”. On the stage to Lorch, the Middle Rhine Valley awaits you with countless, wonderful views.

On days 3 and 4 there are not only forests, vineyards and castles, but also numerous opportunities to find a cosy place to stop. The final stage to St. Goarshausen offers several special sights. The picturesque view of the three castles should be enjoyed just as intensely as the ascent to the legendary Loreley.

  • Hiking along Germany's most famous river: The popular hiking trail accompanies the Rhine for 320km, which is considered to be a junction between the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
  • Vineyards, Rhine Riesling & rustic wine bars: You could say that wine belongs to the Rheingau like water to a river. So you shouldn't miss a tasting of the fine wines and a stop in the rustic restaurants.
  • Idyllic villages with half-timbered houses: Whether Assmannshausen or Lorch, the charming towns along the tour offer an architectural feast for the eyes.
  • Imposing castles and palaces: Over 40 castles, palaces and ruins - built over two millennia - shape the image of the Rheinsteig. On the tour you will pass, among other things, the Niederwald hunting lodge, the Nollig castle ruins and Gutenfels Castle.
  • UNESCO World Heritage region: Wine-growing area, important traffic route, cultural landscape - the Upper Middle Rhine Valley has been one of the exceptional regions of the world selected by UNESCO since 2002. We think it’s rightly so!

The Premium Hiking Trail certificate does what it promises: The Rheinsteig runs along beautiful and well-tended paths, and the signage is excellent. The stages are generally easy to manage, but the differences in altitude should not be underestimated. There are options for shortening it.

Itinerary at a glance

The Rhine is an important traffic stream, known for its multi-layered culture and traditional wine-growing. You will see the castles Katz, Maus and Rheinfels at the Dreiburgenblick (three castle view) before you climb the Loreley rock.

Today you tackle (by cable car) the mountain chains to the Middle Rhine Valley and enjoy a breathtakingly beautiful panorama and view onto the Nahe-estuary. Past the hunting lodge Niederwald you hike to Assmanshausen, renowned for its exquisite red wines and the stunning half-timbered houses. In your Day Finish Lorch again lots of half-timber awaits you and on top of that excellent wine.

On diverse paths and along mountain chains with a fantastic panorama over the Rhine valley the route leads into the historic shipping town Kaub or via the mountain chains to Dörscheid. Castle ruin Nollig, Gutenfels castle and as a highlight the impressive toll-castle Pfalzgrafenstein, situated directly on an island on the Rhine, transform today’s tour into a true experience.

The heart of the Middle Rhine Valley awaits with serpentine-tracks, fabulous views and legendary castles. The best-known rock on the Rhine, the Loreley-Rock, is also part of your itinerary, as well as the three-castle-view onto Katz castle, Maus castle and Rheinfels castle.
