Arrival in Besse
As a start to your hiking holiday you explore the southern plains of the Sancy-massif. Initially you reach the beautiful Lakes Pavin and Montcineyre, both with volcanic origin and the peaks of the hills reflecting in their waters. Afterwards the route leads you onwards through the hamlets „Teston du Joran“ and „Motte de Brion“, all the way to the village of la Godivelle, with an idyllic location between the two lakes.
Today is totally characterised by the ‚Green Desert‘, the giant volcanic Cézallier-plateau. You ascend the exceptional mountain of Chamaroux, from the peak of the distinctive twin-hills you enjoy a stupendous view between Sancy and Cantal. Onwards over the Huides-mountain chain and Mount Rocherousse across marvellous alpine scenery, where you can see grazing cattle in their hundreds.
Landeyrat – Chalinargues
You leave the plateau and descend to Allanche, the cenre of the Cézallie-region. Take a stroll through the pretty village, renowned for markets and exhibitions, particularly during the period of cattle drive in spring and autumn. After that you ascend the Bois de Pinatelle and proceed to the village Chalinargues.
Chalinargues – Le Claux
In the morning short transfer to the hamlet Fortuniés, situated high above the Santoire-valley. On the other side you find the Cantal-volcano. The route leads initially via Nozières and la Croix de Gendarme towards Puys and the Limon-plateau, then downhill again into the glacial valley of la Rhue, situated below the impressive pyramide of the Puy Mary‘s northern face.
Ascent to the Serre-pass, from where you discover the peaks of the Cantal-volcanic moutains from its most beautiful angle: the Impradine-valley, the Rolland-aperture, Puy Mary, Puy de Peyre Arse and Puy Griou. After you rang the ‚Bell of the Missing‘, you descend again to the pass Fonte de Cère.
Even your final hiking stage is once more characterised by volcanoes. You hike through the region Super-Lioran to the pass Pas des Alpins and the to the Plomb du Cantal, which with an altitude of 1855 m is the highest mountain in the Cantal-mountain range. Via the pass Prat de Bouc and the Cirque de Chamalières you reach the pass Molède, characterised by dense forests. In Murat we highly recommend you look at the historic houses built of volcanic rock.
