The sunny slopes of Bavaria and Tyrol

Rolling hills, picturesque valleys and many other highlights along the way make this hike an unforgettable experience. Already in Füssen with Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau you see the fairytale castles of King Ludwig. Soon, the fascinating Tyrolean mountain world and the sprawling nature park of Lechtal, which holds unique flora and fauna. The former salt-producing town of Reutte has a nice historical center and beautifully painted houses. Magnificent views are most likely on the hike to the sunny slopes of the Zugspitzarena - at the feet of Germany's highest mountain. Over the pass with its crystal-clear mountain lakes, the route leads through the picturesque Gurgltal valley into the green the Inn valley. Past villages with retroromanic roots, Roman and medieval customs stations and milestones the Reschenpass is vanquished.

Tour course

1st Day: Individual arrival in Füssen

2nd Day: Füssen – Reutte
Füssen leads like a gate into the mountains of Tyrol, in the holiday region of Reutte. In the footsteps of the Romans along the Lech River it goes over the ridge to Pinswang. At the highest point there are Roman wagon tracks to be discovered. Past the idyllic Urisee Lake into the center of the Reutte market with the local museum "Grünes Haus” (Green House) and the typical facade painting. Walking time: about 4.5 to 5 hours.

3rd Day: Reutte - Lermoos
The original street of the Via Claudia Augusta leads up to the Ehrenberger Klause, where “Zwischentoren” (between gates), the area between the two gates (the customs stations and Fernstein and Ehrenberg) begins. As of now the nature is clearly alpine. Over the deep green lake Heiterwanger you walk on a panorama trail towards the your destination Lermoos.
Walking time: about 6-7 hours.

4th Day: Lermoos - Nassereith
Today your route leads first through the wetlands "Moss". Here the Romans accomplished a masterpiece in building: the road led on thousands of tree trunks "floating" through the swampy area. After Biberwier (Roman road station), the trail rises and becomes the barren landscape around the Fern Pass, which is marked by a landslide 10,000 years ago. Past crystal clear mountain lakes and the Schlosshotel (castle hotel) Fernstein into the village of Nassereith.
Walking time: about 5.5 to 6 hours

5th Day: Nassereith - Imst
First, it goes along the pilgrimage village of Dormitz and through forests and meadows into the Gurgtal valley where the “Knappenwelt” lies. On your route you will go further along the castle of Schloss Starkenberg with the beer adventure world "Biermythos“ and the Starkenberger Lake. Then you arrive at Imst, the "Merno of Northern Italy, the stage end.
Walking time: about 4.5 to 5 hours

6th Day: Imst – Landeck
Through the green Inn valley, over which the Kronburg and a Mary Monastery are high above, the Via Claudia leads to Landeck. In Zams the "Zammer Lochputz" awaits you, a mystical wild gorge with natural beauty and an impressive water fountain. On the way through the Milser Au and Schönwies already by far the castle Landeck is to be seen. Walking time: about 6-7 hours.

7th Day: Individual journey home or extra days.

Route features

On this section of the Via Claudia the route runs - like once the old Roman road - usually slightly above the valley floor on the sunny slopes of the Alpine valleys. You walk mostly on paved roads, forest roads and trails. We recommend a good basic fitness for walking days of up to 7 hours. Short cutting of daily stages is possible by train or coach.
