Saverne - Munster

The chain of medieval fortresses unfolds further to the south and on your way along the Vosges you enjoy the unique panorama of Rhine basin and the Black Forest. In Dieffentahl you reach the Alsatian Wine Street, quite able to compete with the Wine-Streets of the world regarding age, beauty and impressions. Continuing on your walk you pass picturesque vineyards to the right and to the left. After a night in medieval wine-grower town Kaysersberg you reach the summits of the Vosges. Then you reach Munster, home of the famous Munster cheese. In the evening you can taste the Alsatian cuisine in typical “Winstuben”.

Tour course

1st Day: Individual journey to Saverne
In Saverne you can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and French charm of a trading post with typical Alsatian architecture.

2nd Day: Saverne - Wangenbourg
From Saverne, the pretty small capital of the Northern Vosges you walk to fortress Haut-Barr and follow the ridge from fortress to fortress until you reach Wangenbourg. Unsurpassed views of the Rhine basin, Strasbourg and – when the weather is clear – to the Black Forest. Walking time: approx. 5.5 hrs.

3rd Day: Wangenbourg - Oberhaslach
Today you climb Schneeberg  on 961m and cross the „Cascade du Niedeck“ down into the valley of Oberhaslach. Walking time: approx. 5 hrs.

4th Day: Oberhaslach - Klingenthal
Follow GR5 long distance hiking trail to Urmatt, where you cross the valley of Bruch and continue walking to Grendelbruch.Over the Purpurkopf (570 m) and the Heidenkopf (787 m) you reach Klingenthal. Walking time: approx. 4.5 hrs.

5th Day: Klingenthal- Hohwald
Visit the famous Abbey Ste Odile protected since the 12 century by many fortresses. Some of the you pass today, as e.g Kagenfels and Birkenfels. Continue on the long distance hiking trail past Kienberg (775m) to Hohwald. Walking time: approx. 5 hrs.

6th Day: Hohwald - Dieffenthal
From Hohwald you walk to the vineyards and the Alsatian Wine-Street. Cross the Ungersberg (901m) and visit the fortress of Bernstein, before you walk down to wine-grower village Dieffenthal. Walking time: approx. 5.5 hrs.

7th Day: Dieffenthal - Ribeauvillé
Today you follow the signs of the shell, which marks the pilgrimage to Santiago di Compostella. Your path leads along charming little wine villages, over which the castle Haut Koenisgbourg lies. Along the castles of St Ulrich & Gisberg (545 m) you walk to Ribeauvillé. Walking time: approx. 5,5 hrs.

8th Day: Ribeauvillé - Kaysersberg
After the monastery of Notre Dame du Dussenbach you walk through the valley of the Strengenbach and to the castle of Bilstein. Past the St. Alexis Chapel, it get to the end of the stage, the famous wine village Kaysersberg. Walking time: approx. 5,5 hrs.

9th Day: Kaysersberg - Munster
You leave the birth town of Albert Schweizer to walk to pilgrim’s place Les trois Epis. Here the mountain stage starts, giving you a taste of the High Vosges. Cross Petit & Grand Honack (927 m) and tackle a long downhill section into the valley of Munster. Walking time: approx. 6 hrs.

10th Day: Individual departure resp. return by train to Saverne
Take the opportunity to visit Colmar and Strasbourg on your way back.

Route features

Daily walking time approx. 6 hrs and difference in elevation up to max. 1100 m with distances of approx. 17 to 25 km. Tour for experienced walker with a good fitness level.

How to get there/Parking
  • By train to Saverne and a few walking minutes to the hotel.
  • Parking: Hotel garage approx. € 8,50 per day, no reservation possible. Free, unguarded car park near the hotel.
  • Return transfer from Munster to Saverne by train, included in the price, duration approx. 3.5 hrs. If you do not need the train transfer: deduction € 20 per person. Please inform about that when booking the tour.
