The Floating Garden of the Atlantic Ocean
Thanks to the trade winds the volcanic island in the Atlantic Ocean has a lush subtropical fauna. Especially the wealth and variety of flowers are incredible. The sophisticated system of more than 2.200 km irrigation canals to water the sugar cane-, wine- and banana plantations presents a perfect network of walking paths along these „Levadas“. Mountain paths to bizarre peaks with breathtaking views across the blue ocean. You hike through two different regions and climate zones of Madeira, close together and yet completely different.

1st Day: Individual journey to Funchal
2. – 7. Day: Daily choice of the following walking tours:
Monday: Day trip Queimadas/Caldeirao Verde
Follow an ancient Levada surrounded by a profusion of flowers, past small craters and water falls. You will see valleys, mountains and of course the sea. Final visit of Nature Park Queimadas. Walking time: approx. 5 hrs.
Tuesday & Thursday: Half day tour Maroços
A Levada-walk through natural vegetation and terraced cultures with variable fields and fruit. Thousands of flowers are enchanting the walker. The tour starts in Maroços and ends in Ribeira. Walking time: approx. 2.5 hrs.
Tuesday & Thursday: Half day tour Levada da Serra do Faial
Relaxing Levada walk around Funchal. Interchanging views on the mountains and on the sea. The tour starts in 'Caminho do Pico do Infante and ends in Rochão. Walking time: approx. 2.5 hrs.
Wednesday & Sunday: Day tour Rabaçal & Levada 25 Fontes (springs)
Walking tour with view of the daunting valleys and impressing walter falls. Rabaçal is a true paradise. Walking time: approx. 3.5 hrs.
Friday: Day tour Ribeiro Frio/Portela
Levada walk in the inland of the island. You walk past deep gorges and valleys with view of the prominent rock „Penha d’Aguia“. Walking time: approx. 4 hrs.
Friday: Half day tour Levada do Norte
One of the sunniest walking tours with lovely views. You walk past flower decorated houses and can smell the special scent. See the terraced fields along the Levada, typical farmhouses and enchanting gardens. Walking time: approx. 2.5 hrs.
Saturday: Day tour Prazeres /Ponta do Pargo
The tour starts in the very West of the island in midst of the stunning mountains of Madeira. Scenic views on the sea and the little fisher villages on the coast. Walking time: approx. 4.5 hrs.
8th Day: Individual departure or extra days
Route features
The tours are not difficult, anyhow some stages require sure footedness and a good head for height as the Levada paths often follow the slopes. The tours are spread across the whole island and so you will be able to collect many impressions.
